Recipes for non-alcoholic spiced apple cider?

I was surprised with whole bunch of wild apples yesterday and they aren't in the best shape for cooking so I was going to make them into cider.

I can't consume alcohol for health reasons so I'm looking for safe recipes I could follow to preserve the cider without it fermenting.

I've seen mention that apple cider can be processed similarly to the guidelines for apple juice, but since this is my first time attempting to make cider I would appreciate a recipe I could follow specifically for it.

I like a nicely spiced/mulled cider so bonus points for any non-alcoholic recipes for that, but I can also spice it myself so plain sweet cider is okay too.

Thanks in advance friends!

PSHCP Coverage for Corneal Crosslinking (CXL) treatment of Keratoconus

This is a procedure to prevent the progression of a degenerative eye disease which, if left untreated, can result in loss of vision/blindness and cornea transplant as the only means of restoring vision. It's performed by a specialist doctor and was directly prescribed for me by one through the Eye Institute of the Ottawa Hospital.

This is NOT a procedure which improves or corrects vision (ie not PRK/LASEK/LASIK), I would still need to wear glasses afterwards at the same prescription I have now. All it does is stop my vision from continuing to get worse.

Ontario is one of only provinces which do not cover this procedure as part of the public healthcare system, it only covers the cornea transplant surgery as a treatment for the resulting blindness. If I moved 20 minutes across the river to Gatineau it would be covered, which makes this so frustrating.

This procedure typically costs between 2-3k per eye, so about 5k total and that must be paid out-of-pocket or by private insurance.

My spouse's healthcare plan does not cover any vision care outside of routine exams and glasses prescriptions, so PSHCP is my only hope for being able to afford to save my vision and prevent potential blindness. I've been reviewing the PSHCP coverage in detail and I'm very concerned it may not qualify based on the language I'm seeing.

The Canada Life members booklet has allotted $2000 per lifetime for eligible eye surgeries. As per the National Joint Council directive on the PSHCP for what procedures qualify:

>6.3.1 Eligible expenses are the reasonable and customary charges for the following items:
>[....]
>
>(C) Elective laser eye surgery to correct vision, limited to the maximum eligible expense specified in the Summary of Maximum Eligible Expenses per covered person under the Plan, and not per eye or per procedure. The surgery must be performed by an ophthalmologist.
>
>[....]
> >Exclusions:
>
>6.3.2 No benefit is payable for:
> >1. Eye-related procedures which use lasers but where the laser does not reshape the cornea with the goal of correcting common vision problems;

I'm worried that because CXL isn't a corrective surgery (ie my vision will not improve and I still will need glasses) and there is no reshaping of the cornea involved (all it does is strengthen weakened tissue which would otherwise continue to worsen) that it does not meet these criteria for eligibility.

So I wanted to know whether other members of the Canada Life plan in Ontario have had this procedure covered. I really hope so because despite not even covering half of the total costs, it would be the only way I could afford the procedure.

Speeds increase 7-13 km/h at former Ottawa photo radar camera locations, city data shows | CTV

From the article:

>More than 60 per cent of drivers are speeding through school zones this summer at former photo radar locations across Ottawa, with the average speed of vehicles 7 km/h to 13 km/h faster than one year ago, according to data.

Some schools have already begun their new semester and most others will be going back next week. Wonder how driver behaviour may change once they are all back in session and there is no automated enforcement.

Traffic around schools, especially during pick up and drop off can be a nightmare, like the hunger games almost

Where to get fresh rhubarb in Ottawa today?

I've got a fierce craving for strawberry rhubarb pie, and it's this one specific recipe I have so I gotta bake it myself.

I know Farmboy sometimes has it this time of year, but when I've gone to check the last few times they were sold out. And I went to one other store but the rhubarb they had was sad, withered, and limply unappealing.

So please tell me where I can buy some fresh and crisp rhubarb right now, TODAY, and satisfy this wicked craving that makes me feel like some sort of feral creature.

Thanks in advance friends!!

Have food allergies?? No NPSW "appreciation" for you

Ah yes, it's that wonderful time of year where I get to watch coworkers eat mediocre free food (pizza/hotdogs/burgers/icecream) while I have nothing but maybe a can of soda (which I don't even like)

Of course in times of budge cuts, why waste money on getting special food just for the one person who can't eat dairy/eggs/gluten/soy/nuts or any of the other common allergens. And especially not for anyone who has dietary restrictions by "choice" like those pesky vegans, low-sugar dieters (ie diabetics), halal/kosher, etc.

Sometimes you get the consolation of "bring something you can eat!!! Why not even bring enough to share??!" and rarely they offer to cover it retroactively (ha but good luck ever getting the paperwork for that $20-30 refunded before the end of he summer 😜)

And don't you dare feel ungrateful or complain when we are doing so much to ~ **ApPrEcIAtE ** ~ you, don't you know you could have WFA'd and not enjoying watching others eat at this summer "fun" BBQ everyone is expected to go to.

Parliament O-Train Station escalator/elevator situation is rough right now

Heads up for people that right now there is only one upwards escalator and one elevator working at that station. (As of 8am when I got off my train)

No communication posted about this either.

Also the escalator that's running still requires climbing up a flight of stairs to reach the exit on Queen St north side.

With only a single elevator operating its also packed and pouring over with a line of people waiting for the next one, so it could take a few minutes to get on it during rush periods when a train arrives.

I figure my fellow disabled folks, or anyone else with an injury or other situation that makes stairs unfeasible (parents with strollers, folks with large rolly bags, etc.) could use the heads up and plan for any delays accordingly

Messed up and paired my firm mattress with an insufficiently supportive bedframe

I'm a back sleeper that needs a very firm mattress to avoid lower back pain (no jokes some of the best sleep of my life has been from a yoga mat on the floor).

I just bought a lovely firm supportive mattress with strong coils and a 2.5 inch layer of talalay latex as the comfort layer. It is exactly what my back needs when I lay on it on the floor. However as soon as I lay on it in my bedframe I have issues.

I needed to buy a new bedframe to go with my new mattress and wanted to avoid having to also purchase a boxspring/foundation, and I bought the Ikea TÄLLÅSEN bedframe which said a boxspring wasn't necessary. I also have issues with allergies so I was hoping to avoid a full platform under the mattress which would reduce airflow and potentially lead to issues (my new mattress is double sided so I will be flipping to sleep on the underside every few months)

https://preview.redd.it/hpbr8s71dd1h1.png?width=881&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab36a530b40a09841b76d81b08933d9f3c155583

It uses the luroy wood slats to support the mattress and they are very much the cause of the issue. They flex too much and are spaced too far apart, resulting in my mattress sinking when I lay on it and causing pain when I sleep. Basically my mattress can't support me because there isn't enough supporting it.

I can FEEL the metal beam that runs down the middle of the frame, it ends up being the only place on my mattress that I can lay down and get the proper firm support I need.

Since I splurged on my mattress my budget is a tad tight now when it comes to addressing this and I can't afford to try out a bunch of different options before finding something that works reliably. I also can't really afford to buy another new bedframe for this mattress instead so I have to make this one work somehow.

Suggestions on what I can do to fix this?

Would buying a second set of luroy wood slats and having them be placed twice as close together work? Do I have to give up on the whole airflow idea and just buy something like either plywood or a bunkie to go under the mattress instead?

Open to a lot of ideas and suggestions, my back will thank you.

I have a severe wool allergy and I've found it incredibly frustrating how common wool is in most major mattress brands. I've noticed many of the quilted material on top/outside of mattresses can be a wool-blend (especially the ones that claim to have "cooling" or "moisture wicking" effects).

My wool allergy is so severe that even when I sleep on mattresses outside my home that contain wool, I can find myself becoming congested overnight (discovered this out when my friend bragged about me sleeping on their super soft guest bed with a box mattress that used wool as a filling and it ended up being one of the worst sleeps in recent memory). I definitely do not want to spend the next decade sleeping on a mattress that is going to trigger my allergies.

Plus I also have ethical opposition to using wool and other materials derived from industrial animal farming when I can avoid them. There are plenty of other materials out there I can use instead, it just requires doing a bit more searching for them. And trying to do my own searching online for mattresses is full of covert advertising and AI written slop.

So looking for suggestions of brands with completely wool-free mattresses. My ideal preference in mattresses leans towards the quite firm end of the spectrum, with strong coils and less foam being the base of the firmness.

Thanks for the help.

Butch lesbian looking to buy a suit for weddings this summer.

It needs to be a traditional masculine style suit (not a women's/feminine pantsuit style) but with sizes that an acomodate wider hips, relatively smaller shoulders, and room in the chest area to fit a female body.

Big dealbreaker is anywhere that would be homophobic/transphobic towards non-men buying traditional "men's" suits (have had experiences with weird looks and being treated awkwardly in the past).

Budget range would probably be for off the rack options, with some allowance for simple alterations (ie hemming, taking in waist slightly, etc)

Also the person wearing the suit has a wool allergy so we need somewhere with many options for non-wool suits.

Local options preferred but open to any suggestions.
