Been on a wet fly kick

As spring has progressed, I’ve found myself really enjoying swinging up trout on soft hackles with my single hand Spey rig. I’ve also enjoyed tying these flies. Simple, impressionistic, and irresistible under the right conditions. Something about partridge hackle, CDC, and pheasant tail just seems right.

Spectacular river. Great geological sight seeing, fun water, lights out smallmouth fishing. 10/10, no notes.

Got out for some desert canoe camping and smallmouth fishing. Absolutely blown away by these voracious little fish, hadn’t fished for them prior to this trip and holy smokes they are a ton of fun; they’ll hit darn near whatever, and they fight like the devil. Caught some northern pike minnow on the fly as well

Found some willing redbands under the mid afternoon sun. Quite warm out, nice to ditch the waders for a change

Lately, I’ve been especially appreciative of the rich geological storybook that is central Oregon as I’ve been out fishing and skiing. Structural textures laid open by millennia of fluvial erosion juxtaposed against the active (and rather fragrant) vents high up on Mt Hood all seem to both compress and dilate time. It’s been fun to remind myself why I studied geology in college in the first place.
