Any other fly-yakkers out there?

Thought i’d dabble in waving the wand at the smallies in my local lakes this season, and as of last week it’s looking like my spin rod will see very limited action for the foreseeable future! However, my eat to hookup ratio seems pretty low. (Est. 33-60%)

So my question is, Strike vs Strip Set.

I watched Alvin Dedaux’s YouTube tutorials and saw the recommendation to strip set instead of strike. From the odd occation that i can resist the urge to yeet the rod skyward at the first sign of a bite, the stripset seems like the way to go, but i’ve found it to be a challenge when fishing out of a kayak. The best solution i’ve come up with so far is holding my rod out infront of me while stripping, and trying to yank the rod back towards me before lifting the rod tip. That being said i still swing for the fences probably more often than not, given the 20ish years of strike reaction training i’ve had through every other avenue of fishing.

I’ve been using both a 6wt and 8wt, floating line and unweighted streamer, size 1 hook with a weed guard. Hookup rate is better on the 8wt, as mostly by the time i realize a fish has bit, my reel is already beside my ear.

Also, I have no idea if 30-60% is good or not, seems low to me or is that just part of the small craft bass fishing with a starvation stick game?

Curious if anyone else with experience chucking bundles of feathers whilst sitting on a floating hunk of plastic has some wisdom they’d lend an internet stranger

Tight loops and tight lines!

New to the sub

New here, figured I’d share my last couple of days fishing for bass. Was fishing in Maine with my 3wt euro setup. Got em all on the game changer fly.

First big one

First time hooking a smallie big enough to want to put it on the reel. We'll call it 18" because I didn't have a tape, but close enough to 20" I was excited!

Got it on a #6 clouser, black and chartreuse. Vintage Orvis 8wt rod w/ SA carp line. Swung the fly through a deeper run into the current break off the last bit of bank on a small shallow section behind a bridge pylon.

Fished the Shenandoah river for the first time. 7wt rod with a green popper. Great time!

Got to fish the Shenandoah over the weekend for the first time.

First smallmouth on the fly!

Ain’t much but it was honest work. Smoked a #6 Murrays Marauder. Had several follows on a Murrays Heavy Hellgramite but no takers. Water still might be a little cool where I’m at, but looking forward to chasing the brownies this summer!

Neighborhood Pond Bass On My Own Gurgler Fly

Been getting better with my presentation and managed to get this one early morning chasing bait up shallow in our neighborhood pond. Size 2 white/pink gurgler fly I tied just the day before.
