What is working as an Automation Engineer like?

Hello everyone, I am 17 and I just got enrolled in a university department that will allow me to become an Industrial Automation Engineer in the future (note that I live in Europe/Greece and not US). Originally I wanted Computer Engineering, and specifically going to the path with Embedded Systems, because I wanted to work both software wise and hardware wise. I didn't end up qualifying there so I opted in for the department above since it was the best alternative than taking a whole year off again for exams. But I am not sure if this job is for me. I know the enviroment is more tough, has a lot of travelling, and is not a 100% desk job but that is fine, infact I prefer that over sitting all day. I am more confused on what I will do on on a day to day basis, and also how different PLC is from standard programming languages. I know there are many ways to program PLC's and most look like a flowchart or circuit, which confuses me on how you can make a complicated machine with so many restrictions. I did ask AI for all the above, but AI hallucinates and I don't trust it with my future and felt to ask here too. I probably left a lot of gaps in this text so please ask me for more information. And I am sorry if this is common information, I did google before sending this post.

Is an RX 7600 for 190€ used a good deal?

I found a Sapphire Pulse variant, that is less than a year old. I only care about 1080p, and im used to 15-20 FPS, so even 30 fps is fine for me just with good graphics. My current build is a 3400G, 16GB 3200/CL16, ik the 3400G is a massive bottleneck but I think upgrading the gpu first makes much more sense. I am not sure if I should go to older cards, like RX 580's and 1660's, since my demand is low, but I think of futureproofing. Thoughts? Keep in mind regions have different prices, I know in some market there are going to be 5060s for that price, im not that lucky lok

Any IPS monitors WITHOUT anti-glare coating?

I know it's a weird request but hear me out.

I have an IPS TV and it's basically reflective, as all TV's. I noticed it has significantly more powerful colors and blacks compared to my monitor that is also an IPS. My monitor looks washed out and the blacks look way worse compared to it.

I think it might be down to the anti-glare coating because when I installed one on my phone I discovered the same exact results. Now for most users I know that having a mirror for display is a big issue because you probably won't even see anything, which is why anti-glare coating comes by standard in every monitor (apart from OLED's for some reason). Luckily for me, my room isn't bright enough to cause that issue. So im thinking, because I can't afford an OLED, and VA's are terrible, are there any IPS displays that have atleast minimal anti-glare?

P.S. Im waiting for the flood of "this is ragebait" and other hate comments to come because this is a very unpopular opinion. It's okay. I said it for you so you don't have to say it now. 😁

I see a lot of people using 40 and 50 inch TV's at this point as monitors for a computer and stating its awesome. I don't deny it I mean its subjective after all but how do you all do it? It seems very impractical and too huge to use with a keyboard and mouse at a reasonavle distance - unless you are sitting 3m away from your setup -.

For example how do you get daily work on such huge screens? Is all you use the computer for, about gaming? Personally I tried a 32" TV I had a while ago and it was practically unusuable. Yes I know TV's and monitors are different, but it was not unusuable due to that. It was too big for me (thats what she said). My eyes were constantly looking up down left right. And 32" is even kind of mainstream, I see there are a lot 32" monitors being offered even by big brands, so I must be the outlier. And also my setup looked ridiculous, my PC looked like an ant conpared to the screen.

What is your point of view? What are you doing different in your setup? Is it worth trying it again with the proper setup?

I let my computer aside for about a year so I could focus 100% on some exams. I left it in a closed room, but I didn't realise the window was a tad open. As a result today I found out that it has some dead worms, roaches and other stuff on it and generally it looks ucky.

Before putting it away I removed all power sources, even the CMOS so I think I should be okay right? But how do I clean it now? I feel like just using air isn't enough. Do I have to dissasemble it and clean it all? How should I proceed? And please be respectful, I know it could have been avoided but I don't need more reminders, just advice 😅

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (local currency 600-700€, but of course open to lower or a tad higher

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Only if the specs are too good and the laptop is in good condition. And also depends on shipping.

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Notebook, can't afford more on my budget I think. I need it to have good and reliable build quality. Performance wise, albeit my demands aren't very high, I want the laptop to do these things VERY good. I do not want to stand all day waiting for "Not Responding..". It's a machine that I need to depend on. Battery life, I just need it to last the time I will be in uni.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Portable enough that I can carry it in and out of uni. I also don't want the flashiness gaming laptops have. I am not 12 year old Timmy buying his first computer. Seriously why do all mainstream gaming laptops look so bad?

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I am primarily doing software development and engineering. So programs like Visual Studio (both the full IDE and VSC), Jetbrains, vmware and other similar programs that I don't remember from the top of my head. I occasionally use programs like Davinci Resolve and Blender, on Blender I only do 3D modeling, so no need for rendering and ect (that stuff is going to be too expensive so thats why im telling that I wont be doing those). For gaming, I am just casual. I play games like ETS2, BeamNG, CS2, Forza Horizon, Asseto Corsa. But gaming is not a big priority mind you. But it would be very nice.

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

30 fps 1080p is fine. I don't need all that 4K 120 FPS HDR 144Hz. Just the games to be playable and enjoyable.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

It needs to be very reliable. So none of that HP e-waste 😂. It also needs to have proper cooling (looking at you HP). It shouldn't hit Tj max after opening a tab. I also need Ethernet and HDMI because at home I will be connecting it to a monitor and use it like a desktop. AMD is prefered because they have superior iGPU's.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to..

I found this Asus ExpertBook PM1503CDA-S70025 15.6" FHD (Ryzen 7-7735HS/16GB/512GB SSD/No OS) for 600€.

About the no os, even better, I'll just load W11 LTSC anyway. It also has another slot for expanding ram, and an extra m.2 slot (but I think its for the smaller ones). The 7735 is not the current generation but all the newer ones are 1000€+, I don't have the budget. There are some Ryzen AI 5 300-350 though, I have no idea what that is.

I figured since it's bussines oriented I should be free from all the e-waste targeted at consumers, but I don't know. That's where I need your help 😊. What do you have to say?
