I don’t even know how to fully articulate why. All I know is that she deserves better. Maybe some of you feel the same.
My 8 year old rarely complains about teachers or staff at her school. She’s a happy kid who also knows how to follow the rules. She’s now at summer camp (not affiliated with the school).
This is her 2nd year at this camp and she’s never complained before. But tonight before bed, she mentioned a new camp counselor that’s “very mean”.
This camp is a cheap one, heavily subsidized by our county. I’m pretty sure all the staff, except the director, are teenagers.
I asked her what happened and she said the counselor just keeps yelling at her and other kids. When I told her I’ll mention it to the camp director (who’s actually pretty nice), she BEGGED me not to say anything because she was afraid the counselor will be even meaner. She was practically in tears.
I’m also afraid she might retaliate. Again, these are teenagers getting paid $14/hr, I’m pretty sure they haven’t had extensive training or anything.
I have to protect my child but how can I go about it without risking her safety as well? Management tends to protect their workers, they might mention it to the “mean counselor” in a “hey cool it, we’ve had complaints” but she might find ways to subtly target my child if she somehow finds out it came from her.
Any ideas?
