Am I actually a tenor/baritenor, or just a baritone with some mix development?
I’m confused because I’ve always thought I was a baritone. My overall range is roughly F2–C5, although obviously range alone doesn’t determine voice type.
A voice teacher recently heard me during a first lesson and immediately labeled my voice a “baritenor”or possibly even a tenor, which honestly shocked me.
Now I’m wondering whether I’ve been singing in the wrong part of my voice this whole time, or whether I’m simply a baritone who has developed some access to mix.
My voice still naturally wants to transition or flip toward head voice around D4/E♭4, which I’ve understood to be fairly typical second-passaggio territory for a baritone.
Here’s a clip of me singing a higher song my teacher is encouraging me to try: “I Never Lie” by Zach Top. It goes up to G4.
Can you hear any distinctly tenor-like timbre in this clip, or could a baritone singing in the upper part of his range sound like this too? I’m curious whether the teacher is hearing something about my natural weight and resonance that I’ve overlooked.
