Question about looking for a vocal coach

I'm a woman who can sing kind of low (at least, I think I can?) and I've decided I want to look for a vocal coach, as I want to improve my singing (mainly for myself). I've never had any training before, but according to a couple different vocal pitch monitors online, I can sing down to an A#2 sometimes, but most of the time I'm comfy around a B2/C3 for my lowest. To be fair, I'm not sure how accurate these online monitors are, but if they are somewhat accurate, I'm wondering if it would benefit me to find a vocal coach who can also sing that low if I want to develop my low notes further? Or does it not really matter?

Any advice is much appreciated! :)

How to CONSISTENTLY have good technique

I'm 99% sure i have the basics of vocal technique down. I've looked through countless resources and understand what I'm supposed to be doing. The problem is I don't think I've figured out how to do it consistently yet. Sometimes when I sing i notice myself "letting go" and that's when i notice a bit of fatigue buildup. I want to get to the point where it becomes habit and mostly effortless

Have you ever wanted to be in a girl group?!?!

Hey everyone! 😊

I’m putting together a 6-member girl group called CTRL♡, and we’re looking for 4 more members! Down below I provide a demo of what our music will sound like and the latest video I posted on the page along with our logo!

Our concept mixes Y2K nostalgia with liminal spaces, backrooms, old internet vibes, analog horror, and early 2000s aesthetics. Think flip phones, Windows XP, empty malls, CRT TVs, camcorders, glitch effects, and catchy pop music with a slightly eerie twist.

Right now there are 2 of us, so we’re building everything from the ground up together.

A few things to know:
💿 Ages 18+
📍 Cleveland or the surrounding area (or be able to travel with reliable transportation)
🎤 Singers, dancers, rappers, and all-rounders are welcome.
🤝 We haven’t started practices yet because we want all six members to be there from the beginning.

This isn’t a company-backed project—it’s for people who genuinely love performing and want to grow together as a team. If you’re creative, committed, and have always wanted to be part of a girl group, we’d love to hear from you!

Feel free to comment or send me a message if you’re interested, and I’ll send you the audition information. 💖 https://www.instagram.com/weare\_ctrl?igsh=YXRzN3FjMWozbjRo&utm\_source=qr

Looking for countertenor pieces

Hiya,

I’m sorta new to classical singing although I’ve been working in pop, specifically metal, for around ten years. I’ve started working with a new teacher to learn classical singing and since I got into that style via experimental music and my classical knowledge is rudimentary at best I’m looking for pieces I could learn.

My teacher told me to find something I like (obviously) but i don’t even know where to start 😅
I like anything sad, moody and atmospheric.
Bonus points if it’s non orchestral as I prefer piano and chamber music/string quartets over orchestra.

My range is around b1 - E4 if that helps

Thanks!

EDIT: it would appear notation systems are fucked lol so to clarify:
My range is more like b2 - E5, we got confused by wether we should call middle C C3 or C4
Also: neither my teacher nor myself calling myself a countertenor just yet. I asked her what kind of pieces I should look for because my classical knowledge is limited
Sorry for opening that can of worms 😅

Love to sing, but songwriting is a drag

Anyone else in this boat? What do you do? I enjoy singing and am going to start doing some open mics, but when I sit down and try and write my own stuff, it is almost impossible. I’ll get snippets, but I am honestly not good at all with putting together something cohesive. Do any of you collaborate with writers? What does that look like? Do you pay them?

Help with vocal coach

This may be a bit long but I’ll try to summarize it. So I have been taking voice lessons on and off for a year now( they’re expensive so I usually take time off to save up to pay for the next couple of months) but I don’t really see much progress.

A little context of what my lessons involve. We do vocal warmups for five minutes, then sing a song and she asks me how it felt, not really about how it sounds (which I really don’t mind because I’d rather sing healthily than hitting the highest note). She does provide guidance on how to hit notes like opening my mouth wider for higher notes and better breathing to avoid tension.

That being said, I do have some issues that I’m trying to understand if they’re my vocal coach or I’m just not well versed with everything that comes with singing. Firstly, I am a baritone (20m) and she said some baritones do not have head voice and that I may be one of them. She doesn’t teach me how to breathe, she makes me wear a band which I’m supposed to feel but I’m still confused. She can sometimes not point out my bad vocal techniques even if I notice them. She also pointed out I sometimes sing in straight tone(I added a video which can somewhat demonstrate that) but I don’t know or haven’t been taught how to lock in on my vibrato.

Am I doing too much and being impatient or should I l look for another voice teacher?

Am I far behind? Some advice from maybe more experienced singers?

I’ve been in singing lessons since May of 2024 and currently I’m 16 in a drama company. It’s been 2 years now where I’ve been singing with lessons and I STILL can’t seem to grasp the concept of breath support, as in singing with support and not singing from my throat.

It’s definitely improved, my singing is healthier than it used to be but I still deal with needing to clear my throat excessively after every time I sing and throat tension.

I feel like 2 years is way too long to not understand one of the most fundamental concepts with singing. I suppose I’m worried that because of how slow I’m progressing with it and my failure to understand it— especially when all my friends in my drama company seem to understand it easily— that I’m just not meant for singing.

Please can someone share some advice or tips, especially if you’re an experienced singer who now understands the concept after struggling with it first. Tell me what made it click for you, please. To be honest, I really want to understand it soon because it’s killing my passion for singing everyday and when I used to love it.

Closed vowel

So I was wondering how does one navigate closed vowels? I began to struggle immensely when the lyric “mientes” came around because it forced me into a closed vowel belt that while I did hold it, was quite hard to do so. Or is there a way to develop your voice to attack closed vowels easily

[My Man] Wish to learn to sing on my own like Barbra Streisand. Any feedback please?

I'm 17M and was attempting to sing My Man by Barbra Streisand.

As is obvious, I haven't taken any classes of had anything form of vocal training. I just like to sing songs I like and have been doing so daily for about 4 years now. Somedays I sing for about 3-4 hours.

Any advice or feedback? How does my voice sound? Can I ever learn to sing on my own? I also cannot pronounce certain letters or speak like normal people, does that affect my singing?

I know my singing is flat and pitchy and I don't honestly know how to get better. I can't take classes and want to slowly get better on my own.

21 year old deep Bass singer looking to make Basses mainstream again

Hey guys, like the title says, I’m Brandon and I’m a 21 yr old Bass Singer. I’ve been singing since my voice first deepened around 15. That was around the time I got back in to old (late 40s to early 70s) Doo Wop, R&B, and Soul. Now, I love other genres too (Hair Metal, Jazz, Rock and many of its sub genres, etc) and I’m more than “just a Bass”, I can make it to 2nd Tenor on a good day and on a great day, falsetto. However this stuff really shakes me and my now late, but ever great, Pop Pop introduced me to it at a young age. To honor him and do what I love at the same time, I’m looking to make Bass-led stuff mainstream again.

My biggest inspirations (Bass Wise at least and heavy on the first two) are: Melvin Franklin (Temptations), Bill Brown (Dominoes and Checkers), Jimmy Ricks (Ravens), “Boots” Bowers (King Odom Quartet, Larks, and Ravens), and “Dub” Jones (Jacks/Cadets and Coasters) in that order.

Will a coach take me if my voice is nasally?

When I was in middle school, I was in our school's show choir, which gave me a huge boost in unjustified self-confidence. Several people told me I was tone deaf, and for 15 years, I've been too insecure to sing. I also am not tone deaf, I'm just not ear-trained.

Due to a broken nose, my speaking and singing voice is nasally, and I do not have professional aspirations I just want to be able to sing again. If my voice will always sound pretty bad, and I don't have professional aspirations, will a vocal coach take me? Or will they just tell me it's a waste of time? With how insecure I already am about my singing voice, I really don't want to sing in front of a coach just for them to refuse to train me.

Why does drumming make my voice so much better?

I play the drums and am learning to sing. Some days I’ll do my whole vocal warm up but still can’t make a good noise. But when I spend an hour or two on the drums, I’ll sing after and I feel so open and effortless. I’m curious what causes that so I can maybe replicate it when I’m not near the kit?
