Is singing a Capella hard?

Before I start I want to say that this is an extremely respectful post, I by no means want to offend anyone, this is a genuine question.

I keep seeing people saying that singing a Capella is really hard. How is it hard? I can understand going too fast or too slow rhythmically, but in terms of pitch accuracy how is it? Whenever I sing songs without music, I don’t have any problem with singing it the same as if there was music, I just play the melody in my mind and it works. I have sang songs when the music starts later than the vocals and I have done it no problem. Everyone around me, and my friends who sing, don’t seem to have any problem with that either. I am no virtuosa because I have been in singing lessons for not that long, so could anyone explain the reason for this?

Chest Voice Question

I have a large mix of chest voice, spanning from e2 to around d#5 to e5. I was doing some research, and it's saying that that's physically impossible for someone using chest voice. Before you comment about me being confused with mixed voices, I can assure you I can hit all of those notes with just chest, no falsetto, or head, or any mixed voices, and so can singers like M Shadows, who's gotten around d2 all the way to a5 on occasion.

Has singing changed your opinion of songs? (fun post)

I started singing lessons about a year ago after some friends suggested I try it out following a successful random unplanned karoake attempt (I had not sung in about 15 years having always tried to avoid it). During that karaoke experience I picked songs I liked and before taking up lessons listened to certain songs with a view to singing them. A good example is The Verve "Bitter Sweet Symphony" which for years a I loved, now from the perspective of trying to sing it I find it boring. Even if I still like the song and love the band. There are other examples too from REM... So this is more of a fun post, but have you started to find songs you loved boring and why?

I guess when one analyses songs with a view to singing them the perspective can change entirely.

Tonsil Removal?

I’m a singer who’s about to have their tonsils removed, and I’m horrified of it impeding my singing voice. Am I freaking out for no reason?

Help with rock singing please

Hello, so im female and my vocal range is like an F3 to D6 depending on the day (lol) im partly self trained but I did Indian classical for about 2 years idk it made any differnece tbh I had done it when I was quiete young. Ive been singing since I was little and I do shows now but my voice is very thin? Especially as I go up the range like some Disney princess. Im good at broadway songs etc and I sound mostly good at gigs but I feel my voice is weak and I get strained after I do like a 3 hour gig and my notes start requiring pushing they start disappearing I do my vocal exercises regularly and breathing exercises, vowels everything and I just dont know where im going wrong. I can hit mixed notes well

Im supposed to prepare for a rock gig and I just sound disgusting. Like some princess or opera singer singing ac/dc I cant bring the weight and power to my voice and I dont know what to do. If anyone has any tips please help. I dont want to harm my voice. Ive been doing chest voice exercises etc all that and I cant figure out what the problem is.

How is my singing for a first timer?

Hey everyone, I posted this song in the music feedback sub already to get an opinion on it regarding the production and I got a couple of person tell me that they'd save this tho I wasn't really singing the best and im not a singer in any way. But it got me wondering what it would be like if I tried a little bit better to sing correctly. Again, im not a singer, never took any lesson and originally I wanted a friend of mine to sing on it. I just wanna know honest opinions on whether this sounds OK, awful, or whatever basically. Thanks!

PS: I know there is processing and all (no pitch correction) just EQ and reverb basically, my goal is not to become a huge acapella singer star or whatever, im just wandering if a song like this one could be appreciated by people or not and if not is it is because of the singing 😄

Having a small voice

I’m a colouratura soprano so I have a very small voice and it makes me kinda sad cause no matter how hard I try to make my voice sound like it has more weight my dad still will say my voice sounds thin.

is it better to preserve your voice or use it while it’s there?

for context I am a 17 yo M who only started singing two years ago and I’ve been constantly told not to sing higher notes so I don’t lose my voice but I’ve also been told to sing higher to train my voice to go higher

I am aware of the concept of straining and can tell when I am straining or not, I’m constantly looking for methods that fit my voice to belt in a healthy way but I still wonder if belting damages my voice and ruins my range or if it actually helps it widen my range. I am self taught but I am saving up to have a vocal coach soon :)

For me, this is the definition of FLOORING it on both sides of my range. I was able to achieve a D2 and an F#5, and I’d love to hear if anyone else is as satisfied by this project as I am! Thanks in advance.

There is some lip syncing. There’s even less autotune. (One track has it. I wont tell you which).

I’m Starting with a decent range but can’t use it

I started taking vocal lessons about 1.5 months ago maybe a little less but point is I am having trouble using my range. So my teacher has gone through multiple test for my range and I’m a baritone with 2 octaves and a fifth of range, I have no musical experience and I also don’t sing very often at all and haven’t much growing up because I was always so embarrassed. I supposedly have all these notes I can hit but in real singing I struggle to. I just don’t know if there is something that I am doing wrong from the beginning and would like to k ow if anyone else has this problem. It sucks because I can’t even begin to “expand” my range without first getting a hold on what I already have.

TLDR how do you use your own range?

What Register is this?

Hello! They've changed the flares since I last posted on here so I apologize if this isn't quite right.

I'm a low voice (~C2-E4) and I've been trying to work on placing that F4 more healthily and also getting up to a G.

I struggle to understand/access mix, but I recently clocked that I can hit up to an Ab4 but its in an odd placement that I can't get louder right now. I attached a recording of a siren because I want to know: what mode is this? Is it a healthy placement that I can use, and if so how can I get it louder/fuller?

If it helps to specify the sensation here it feels sort of higher up in my vocal folds? It's difficult to pinpoint so if anyone has super laser ears that'd be a godsend!

Pardon any cracking, I was rehearsing for multiple hours and my voice is tired!

Genuinely, why do I sing better on opioids?

Probably a different post this community is used to seeing but I recently had surgery and I got all the time for a month to make music. They put me on oxys for pain. Usually when singing I have the most trouble with breath control because of the way I am with anxiety and overthinking. It’s like oxys completely fix that for me. It just makes no sense to me because oxys are for pain not for anxiety.

But I also hate that I can sing better while on an opioid because I don’t want to be a good singer on a drug. I want to be good at it naturally, it’s just the anxiety takes over my breath sometimes.

Opinion — How do you find songs that fit your voice?

Why: This is a question that I had for quite a while and couldn‘t find any satisfactory answers online. I figured I’d make a post so others have an easier time.

Me: So, I’m a baritone (F#2-D5) with a thick Southern accent and a naturally high speaking voice (it's that nasally twang). But, when I sing, I naturally gravitate toward the lower part of my range and lose most of the twang (don't ask me why🤷‍♂️).

The Question: How do I find a song that fits my voice?

The Myth: First, there is a myth (or false idea) that people get in their heads starting out that they have to change to sing a song. That the range or style of their voice limits them to certain kinds of songs. The truth is that the song changes to meet you.

Can‘t hit that note? change it! The song has a regional accent or unique mannerisms? so what? You —the one reading this— can alter any song you want to fit your own voice in your own unique way. I promise you it will be 20x better than if you try and copy the original.

The Answer: It sounds simple, right? Just sing any song and make it your own! Not buying it? Fine. Here‘s a list of the order of importance when picking a song. Find a song that (if applicable) fits 1) the occasion, 2) the message, 3) your style, 4) in your range.

Resources: There are a number of resources out there for finding your vocal range, guided exercises, one-on-one coaching platforms, etc... you just have to find them! Google is free guys!

Conclusion: Sing what you like and get creative! Find what speaks to you personally, and make it personal. That’s what singing is all about!

Final Statement: Thanks for reading! I really hope this helps someone. Have a good day, redditers.

EDIT: THIS IS NOT AI. No, I did not use AI to write this post. Nor did I use it to “assist me” in any way, shape, or form. This is 100% human. I absolutely dispise AI. I literally wrote this on my lunch break.
