Had my second voice lesson!

I posted last week about having my first vocal lesson, and I had my second one today. I am writing this as just a tool for myself to document my progress. I struggle with severe anxiety and my vocal coach is the only person I have sung in front of since middle school lol.

Today we worked more on breath. I have good breath support, but I tend to disengage on higher notes or even just randomly. We’re doing lip trills with a song. If the trill stops that means I have separated a note or have stopped engaging my breath support. We go back and do the same lines again until I can complete it without the lip trills failing.

We didn’t work on much more, my lessons are only 30 minutes, but we will be increasing the duration once I become more comfortable.

Other notes for today’s lesson are that she equated my singing to Amy Lee. Huge compliment lol, I think she meant more of my vocal style and range, but I will take what I can get haha.

One of my managers at work, who went to school for voice as well, told me about a technique that I have been utilizing. It’s basically just where to put your hands. So I have been placing my hands on my stomach to help keep myself engaged.

I am very nervous and excited to continue on my singing journey, and would appreciate more tips if anyone has any, or if this post has helped you at all let me know! :)

Had my first voice lesson

I had my first ever voice lesson today with an amazing woman. I learned a few things about myself today and thought I would share to document and also get others feedback as I go along through it.

I started singing as a child with my siblings. We had Rock Band and they wanted to do the guitar and drums, so naturally I ended up doing all the vocals. As I got older I got into theatre and doing plays for my school. Though just ended up switching to instruments. Playing the saxophone and violin. I got really self conscious about my singing and stopped singing in front of anyone. If I did/do sing, it’s a twangy piercing tone that ultimately exhausts my voice to the extreme. Everyone knows I can sing apparently based on that and I was invited to sing in a band. Though when it came down to it, I wouldn’t sing. I am too self conscious, and afraid of singing in front of others. I booked lessons and wouldn’t show up to them. Even ghosting the instructors out of fear.

Today, I wanted to cancel, I wanted to say “sorry I actually don’t have time today” even though I am at home sitting in fear. I decided to go, and it went well. I have issues, but it’s nothing world ending. I was told that I have great strong breath, and a good voice. I do unfortunately apparently, do a fake vibrato, but I also do a real one. Which I honestly didn’t know there was a difference in those mechanics. For the future we are going to work on my anxiety and the false vibrato, as well strengthening my upper range.

I am being trained in more classical styles as well as opera, and someday, I may share some clips of that on here.

TLDR:

I had my first voice lesson after being too anxiety ridden to go. I learned that I have a real and false vibrato, but good and strong breath support. I am creating this post to document my progress and get additional feedback.
