Work courses

Hi there,

I know someone close to me whom is working as a server/waitress in Alberta, she has been employed with the franchise for over a month now working part time hours.

In her off time she is required to complete franchise required work courses; unpaid.

She informed me that if the required courses are not completed then they will begin deducting tips and cutting shifts, as it has already happened to some of the other staff.

It is under my impression that this should all be paid time legally?

She brought it up to her manager and was told they would look into it, but I am certain it will get brushed off.

Has anyone else been in this situation before, I think she should bring it up with the labour board.

In my experience and from my research the franchise is legally required to pay anytime for work or requried work courses unless they were a requirement for employment or courses that a worker would take on their own to improve their career etc.
