This is probably a really obscure book, but I adored it as a kid, and would love the chance to read it again.

This was a picture book with at least semi-realistic illustrations. Probably published in the 90s or early 2000s.

I believe the plot went that the donkey belonged to a family and was great friends with the young boy that was part of family. The donkey got sold or otherwise separated from the family.

Years (?) later, the donkey is old, and maybe escapes the new owner.

While trying to get back to his boy, he ends up falling down a hill and got hurt. Just a little later, the boy (now older) comes walking down the path and sees the donkey and is stricken to see his old friend hurt.

And then we have the good Samaritan showing up and helping the donkey and the boy.

From what I remember the pictures were more realistic, and it was set in Bible times.
