I’m curious how many women are on this forum?

I’ve tried to get 3 different women in my life to read this series but none of them made it past the first novel. And only one of the three actually finished the first one. Strangely enough all of them said basically the same thing. “It’s just not a woman’s kind of book” I’m curious to get the perspective of a woman who has read this series. Did you find anything about these books that would cause a female reader to feel that way??

Not all ghosts are scary

Recently I was installing a coffee machine at a retirement home just off the main dining room. As I worked I noticed an old woman with a cane wearing a faded pink shawl shuffling slowly toward me. In my experience retirement home residents are often so starved for conversation that once they stop to chat, particularly with a new face, they tend to ramble on for quite awhile. Now I generally enjoy talking to old folks. They have great stories. But since I had a limited amount of time to finish my install I admit, I was kinda dreading the inevitable conversation. However when she finally made it over to where I was working I put on a big smile and we began to chat. We/she talked about random things for probably 5 minutes. At that point I had to kneel under the counter to connect a drain line. I told her what I was about to do and assured her I was still listening to her story. But when I stuck my head under the counter she suddenly stopped talking. I assumed she was just waiting for me to finish but when I pulled back and turned toward her, she was gone. It shocked me because I couldn’t have been under the counter more than 10-15 seconds, but in that time she somehow managed to disappear. Thinking she must’ve gone into the dining room I poked my head around corner expecting to see her shuffling away. But again, she was no where in sight. Confused but still in a time crunch I just chalked it up as a weird occurrence and went back to work.

Later as the dietary manager was signing the paperwork I mentioned the woman and commented on how mysteriously she’d disappeared. When the manager heard it she paused, looked up from the paperwork and gave me a dubious look. “Did someone tell you to say that?” Surprised at the question I replied with a chuckle, “Uh… No. Why would you ask that?”
Rather than answer she asked a question of her own. “Was she carrying a wooden cane and wearing a pink shawl?”
When I nodded the manager laughed and shook her head in disbelief. “So you met Mrs Thibodeaux?” she asked almost wistfully. “I can’t believe that. You’ve been here what.. an hour? I’ve been here over a year and I’ve never even seen her”
Confused but curious I asked what she meant and with a sigh she told me the story.

Apparently Mrs Thibodeaux was a long term resident who’d passed away back in 2010! Since then (according to the manager) at least a dozen staff members have reported seeing Mrs Thibodeaux shuffling down the hallways in her pink shawl. She’d been spotted sitting alone in the dining and recreation rooms many times. There’s even stories of Mrs Thibodeaux talking with new staff members and warning them about other residents whose health was failing. Now I can’t confirm any of that but I will say, as she was telling me the story I KNEW it was true. I felt it in my bones. There’s no other way to explain it.

And… that’s it. That’s the story.
I realize it’s not scary or exciting but I’m absolutely convinced I had a 5 minute conversation with the ghost of Abigail Thibodeaux 16 yrs after her death.
When I go back there in August for a follow up you can bet I’ll have tons of questions for the staff. And to Mrs Thibodeaux, wherever you are, feel free to stop and talk next time you see me.

Not all ghosts are scary

I was working at a retirement home recently installing a coffee machine just off the main dining room. As I worked I noticed an old woman with a cane wearing a pale pink shawl shuffling slowly toward me. Now typically I enjoy talking to old folks. They have great stories. But the residents at retirement/nursing homes are often so starved for conversation that once they stop to chat they tend to ramble. Particularly when they see a new face.
Since I had limited time to finish the install I was kinda dreading the inevitable conversation. But trying to be a good guy, I put a smile on my face and once she finally made it to where I was working, we began to chat. We/she talked about random things for about 5 minutes. At that point I had to kneel under the counter to connect a drain line. I told her what I was about to do and assured her I was still listening. It shocked me because I couldn’t have been under the counter more than 10-15 seconds, but in that time she seemed to’ve vanished. Thinking she must’ve gone into the dining room, I poked my head around corner expecting to see her shuffling away. But again, she was no where in sight. Confused but still in a time crunch I simply dismissed it from my mind and went back to work.

Apparently Mrs Thibodeaux was a long term resident but… she’d passed away back in 2015! Since then several members of the staff reported seeing her shuffling down the hallways in her pink shawl. She’d been spotted sitting alone in the dining and recreation rooms. There’d even been stories of Mrs Thibodeaux chatting with new employees. Giving them pointers and even warning them of other residents whose health was failing. Now I don’t know if any of that is true but it was clear the dietary manager believed it. And I have to say, as she was telling me the story I KNEW it was true. I could feel it in my bones.
Now that’s where the story ends and I realize it’s not a very ‘scary’ story. But I’m absolutely convinced that I had a 5 minute conversation with the ghost of Abigail Thibodeaux 16 yrs after her death.
