Why are coins used in wishing fountains instead of purpose made objects?

I'm curious about the history and symbolism behind wishing fountains.

I know that people have thrown coins into springs, wells, and fountains for a very long time, but I'm interested in *why* coins became the object associated with the ritual.

Was there something culturally or symbolically significant about using a coin specifically, or was it simply because coins were a convenient way of making an offering?

More broadly, what gives the ritual its meaning from an anthropological perspective? Is it the coin itself, the act of giving up something of value, the offering to a place or deity, participation in a shared tradition, or something else?

I'd really appreciate any historical or anthropological context, especially if there are examples from different cultures.

Thank you 😊

Do you still throw coins into fountains/wishing fountains, and if so, why?

I'm researching how people interact with wishing fountains.

I'm particularly interested in hearing from Europeans, as many of the world's best-known wishing fountains and traditions originated or are most strongly associated with Europe.

Do you still throw coins into wishing fountains?

If not, why not?

Do you usually carry coins with you these days?

Do you think making a wish should always involve throwing a real coin, or could something else feel just as meaningful?

Thanks ☺️
