Third knife, removing finished handle?

Third knife, removing finished handle?

This is my third knife , using my two brick forge and a 1x30 belt sander. Although there’s lots to do better on, I’m particularly unhappy with the handle length. It was meant to run closer to the edge, but I made errors during alignment/drilling. It’s sort of ‘just’ serviceable right now.

These are epoxied on with brass pins. Would it be especially unwise to take a flap disc and just grind these off and start over to get the longer handles? Or just give this one away and start all over?

Any other general tips anyone has on grinding or similar is of course welcome.

G10: Corporeal proof of man’s hubris

What was I thinking? Why would you let me buy these G10 slabs? I purchased these to put on my first knife… and what an afternoon it’s been fitting it. It’s like shaping rock (or something harder than rock. what’s harder than rock? oh right, g10). I’ve burned through two belts and god knows how much lifespan on my respirator. I’ve sunk fifteen dollars on the scales and two hours shaping, but to the garbage bin they go. (Going back to wood, which was my first choice, but there was an error in the delivery of my ironwood.)

I have no idea how you titans of men have conquered this material. I presume lasers and dynamite and some kind of death wish and higher insurance premiums are involved. Ill never look at a g10 handle the same way.

Never again…

I built a two brick forge and shaped some 1084 stock into a small fixed blade. When I first put the blade in, I believe the tip of the blade was overheating. I made some adjustments and got the blade to an orange color and verified it was non magnetic. (The handle was magnetic however.) I quenched in cold canola oil because I forgot to preheat.

When I checked the blade with a file, it didn’t seem to skate quite like I imagined. it left scratches easily enough. I became uncertain enough that I stopped tempering halfway thru and took it back to heat treat again. I made some more adjustment to the forge , but it again only hit the blade, never getting the handle orange. possibly my chamber was too wide. When the whole blade was orange and non magnetic (I was more confident in the color this go), I dipped in heated canola oil. honestly, the file test seemed about the same.

Am I overly concerned with the file test? or does it sound like there’s an obvious error anywhere? I have no evidence it isn’t heat treated, and it was definitely non magnetic. Im just uncertain and don’t want to waste putting handles on a soft blade.

Thanks for any thoughts!
