Pins for knife handles

Hi all!

Super new to knife making so ive ordered some damascus blade blanks to try my hand at handle making! Ive got alot of Jarrah wood i was hoping to use, any pointers for making handles? And pins for blades? Ive been eyeing off mosaic pins but dont want to waste them on my newbie skills if they're something that is going to require more skill! Tia!

Latest custom commission : Japanese influenced folding knife, handforged

Single bevel blade with hand-forged ura. Handle in custom linden wood with 8 layers of urushi lacquer.
The ‘’warrior’’ finish was done hot. I rarely do this finish : it always hurts a little to intentionally rough up a blade. I've turned down several projects asking for it. This time, for this particular build, I said yes.

Cumai chefs knife for a local couple

1084 and copper chefs knife for a local couple. They have me complete freedom to do something impressive. But understated. Havnt decided on handle yet. Billets made by absolute dickhead and one of my best mates. Dane standen, of standen knives.

Laser engraving

Working on a custom order. I used a fiber laser for the engraving and it took 3,5 hours.

BHK : Ronin #2 !

BHK : Ronin #2 !

If you've been waiting to see how the other Ronin is looking wait no longer! This W2 blade will be getting paired with Toxic @fatcarbon scales ( unless someone who wants to give it a home really wants to see something else on it )

Just like the other Tanto both will be getting Hamon heat treats in my new forge!

First (almost) finished knife in two years!

Basically finished with this one. My dremel is dead so I haven't quite finished up the handle:blade transition for scratches, I'll run that up to 240 before hand sanding that to finish it.

Feels good to get this bastard out of the way. Been working on this over the course of two years. Had a kid, relationship drama, and so much more kept me from finishing this.

Kingwood handle, brass pins, 5160 steel. Hand forged, not stock removal. Sitting somewhere around 58 hrc iirc. 1200 finish before polish. Was shave sharp at one point, but I have to re-hone and polish it after the past couple months which I'll do as part of the finishing I previously mentioned.

Not a perfect knife, but I'm pretty happy with it. C&c welcome.

Snakewood Addiction

This was a little Menuki/handle ornament I made for one of my own personal knives.

Really, I just take any excuse I can to polish up some Snakewood. It is one my simple pleasures in life.

This was sanded through 1200 and buffed with pink compound. No topcoat or oiling necessary.

I get all giddy like a kid on Christmas whenever I get to work with this stuff.

Camp/outdoor utilitary knife, 80CRV2 and bog oak

The steel is fully hardened and given a homemade acid stonewash finish (including the heel). The lanyard bead is made from the same material as the handle. When designing this model, I wanted a functional and robust knife while keeping the clean, understated aesthetic that defines my work. The steel is 4 mm thick at its maximum, and the grind has a convex section over the last 3 mm near the edge to maintain maximum strength for demanding tasks.
Hope you'll like it ;)

Would this be a suitable motor for a grinder build?

I'm wanting to build a grinder a little but at a time. Would this be worth getting for $200(i'd offer $150 just to see). I have 220 to the workshop so that's not a problem. I haven't had a ton of time to research so I was looking for some quick feedback while it is still listed.

Broken to new

This knife was or did have 2 more inches to the blade/overall length. While I was doing the finish grinding, I noticed a crack that was on both sides of the bevels. I knew it was worthless attempt to try to grind out the crack, so I popped it against my vice and a huge dark spot was exposed(fuck!). I knew it wasn’t trash can worth so I drew a point and re-profiled the blade. I like the outcome and it’s sold after describing this build to a buddy. I sent him a pic and “I’ll buy it off you, right now!” I still have some sanding to do but from broken to new in just minutes!

S-Grind Nakiri in Progress

Just finished up hand sanding on this S-Grind Nakiri in W2 and you can start to see the hamon line! Time to etch and fit up to the handle which will be made from resin-cast voided Desert Ironwood burl and African Blackwood. First time doing an S-grind, and has been quite challenging but fun, and some test cutting shows that it does indeed help with food release

Made this one for my son

1/4 thick, 1084. Got into the marrow a little bit on the antler but it'll be fine for him a camp knife.

Knife blank question - steel type

A coworker found this knife blank among some things in a garage after moving in to a new house. The tang is marked 40 A2 SS - asking for the wisdom of the group, do you think it is A2 tool steel or more likely, A240 (304SS analog)? Thanks!

First time doing Damascus at my own shop

Here is my first billet/knife from Damascus at my own shop and not at a class. 60 layers. 1084 and 15n20. I used about 1/3 for the knife. 4 cubic inches.

Starting weight was 4.6 lbs and billet came in at 3.8 lbs when finished.

I used Clark iron forge 25 ton press
