Is this considered good work for a seal replacement from a Carmax tech? I don’t think they used the right sealant since this type slow releases acetic acid. Plus, the antennae base shifts all over the place from minor movement.
Update: Cause of water leak found!
Carmax finally found where the water was coming from. It took two separate visits because the first one, they just guessed it was coming through a bolt from the rear hatch struts so they placed sealant where the bolt goes.
The next visit they had pinpointed where it was coming from and folded the car ceiling in half to reach the antenna interior. I would have rather them take out the whole ceiling instead of folding it down because it ended up leaving two permanent fold/crease marks on each side of the interior. At least the leak is gone now.
Who knows how many years the car had been leaking, but it finally explains the musty smell when I first bought it and the nasty dirty clothes type of smell that immediately would come after going through a rainstorm or carwash.
The video is the leak while going through a carwash. It’s the same result when in the rain, but just imagine it being nonstop intrusion. I forgot to ask if there was mold on the interior of the headliner so I could get it disinfected by a third party since I also have kids and use this car for many hourlong drives. They didn’t mention anything so I’m assuming it’s ok. The car still constantly smells musty, though, so hopefully that goes away since the leak was fixed two weeks ago so I’m also assuming it might take some time.
I need it because I suffer from a type of short term memory loss that doesn’t let me recollect my memory until weeks after an important incident. A dashcam helps guide me with recollection.
Having said that, after leaving Carmax after my car was worked on all day, I was on my was home and was close to getting t-boned by two different speeding cars running a red light. I only then noticed my dashcam was disconnected from the cigarette lighter as well as the wires messed with close to the rearview mirror; which I’m assuming they were trying to disconnect it that way.
Are Carmax techs allowed to just touch or disconnect whatever they don’t like that’s not theirs inside a customer’s vehicle? I don’t know if I’m going all Karen, but my word and my life depends on this dashcam.
