Thanking this group for letting me know about Stein leads

I used to buy whichever lead brand I could find on stores. Then I read here about the Stein brand. I gave these a shot yesternite and man, are they silky! It's such a pleasurable experience to feel it almost liquefying itself onto the paper. Love them. Thanks to this group I now have a forever brand.

How to properly defrost my fifties fridge?

I inherited my grandmother's fridge. I love it but I have no manual for it and I struggle with ice forming on the top area. Does anybody here have an idea about the following?:

—From the dial on the second image: which setting should be colder: 1 or 10? It has been mostly on 1.

—The Defrost button, when pressed, most of the times produces a mechanical whirring on the fridge and, yes, the ice melts but not completely. And sometimes it apparently does nothing. If I press it again, sometimes it does work. Is this normal behaviour? The fridge hasn't had any core repair I kniw of, besides having the door rubber sealer replaced once and the lightbulb twice in 75 years or so.

—I have resorted at times to carefully use an icepick to remove the ice and taking the chunks out manually but I am afraid I might end up damaging the inner surface. I have no idea if my grandma used the icepicks at home for that purpose, since I cannot recall watching her doing this.

Vector practicing (chubby automobiles)

I have always liked chubby vans and I sketched some on my notebook, using for inspiration a real automovile found on another sub. I cartooned the original, having fun with interpretation. I want to finish up the three of them at some point.

All vectors. perhaps four hours work for the top one.

Some of my Star Wars figures back from my childhood and recent ones.

A lot of them still need vitrines to be displayed with. Some of them need to be dusted!

Working on a file. Poof!: it won't open again

I have been working over the last week on a font. Today I saved it, restarted the program and when I tried to open the same .vfc file, all I got was the text "There were problems interpreting the font file format". I have restarted Windows to no avail. Any ideas if this can be fixed? I have a backup file, but all my recent work would be lost if I went that route.

ELI5 What becomes of odours?

Why are not odours released through history just being added to newly-created ones? (Or are they and we do not detecting it because the process is so gradual? 🤔) Do their molecules break down with time and the odour is thus gone? Do they —once depleted— just become what we know as "ghosts"? Do ghosts then scare us because when scared we might release new odours into the wild, therefore preserving their species?

I am not dumb, so feel free to explain it to me like I'm six, if needed.

Just joking, but I really would like to know what becomes of odours... ;)

Looking for font foundry recommendations to sell my fonts through.

I first dipped my toes into type design during the nineties. I produced a couple of very rough fonts for my amusement back then. With the passing of time I started learning calligraphy and studying type design. I have produced now some five or six fonts which I would like to make commercially available. I have heard from many people (if not all) that almost nobody makes a living out of designing type. But I have a passion for it (as I assume you do), and even though the perspective of a small extra income is always welcome, I just want to give it a shot. There are mostly Occidental display fonts and one intended for text, particularly for setting texts with glyphs used during the seventeenth century (lots of old symbols inside). Basic OpenType features, no variable fonts.

I presented two specimens to a Latin American foundry which I have always liked, and they were interested in them, but two things made me pause. They told me I wouldn't be legally able to sell them anywhere else and the owner made some slight remark about the type sales being completely flat nowadays, which kind of depressed me. I still have the chance to ask them for a contract to understand the specifications but, what foundries would you recommmend?

  • Do all or most of them specify on their contracts that they are the sole vendors once your font is comissioned to them?
  • How many fonts do you think one needs in the market to at least have some monthly income, no matter how high?
  • Is it better creating your own foundry, managing- and cost-wise?
  • Would you recommend the foundry/foundries you have dealt with? What have the benefits been for you? Is there any which I should avoid?

I don't want any dealings with Monotype, and also, there was another foundry (highly recommended on this sub) with whom I had an introductory chat and afterwards they told me I needed to have an online portfolio (which I don't and I don't plan to have), so the deal fell through before it started. ; ) I regrettably cannot remember the name of those guys.
