[partially lost] NSP cover of Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’

This is a long shot— i’m not really expecting much out of this, but I thought I might as well ask out of curiosity.

The comedy band Ninja Sex Party has a tradition of releasing mostly 80s-centric cover albums, titled ‘Under the Covers’. And on Under The Covers III, released in 2019, a cover of the Michael Jackson song Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ was planned to be on the tracklist.

Now, of course, the Leaving Neverland documentary also had come out in 2019— so you’d probably see how that could be a sticky situation. So, despite the song being fully recorded and seemingly ready to go, the band figured it’d be in the best interest to play it safe, and cut it from the final album.

So far, i’ve only seen one clip of the song— an instagram video NSP posted with a snippet of the cover in the background (which i can share if anybody wishes). But, there has always been this talk about the full track being leaked somewhere. This could, of course, all just be rumor… But i’d be lying if i said it didn’t strike my interest. So yeah, if anybody has any luck, let me know.

What common misconception about CAKE have you noticed?

For me, people always classify John McCrea’s vocals as primarily, or even strictly “spoken-word” when… idk to me, that’s never been the case?

i mean sure— the most popular tracks like The Distance, Short Skirt/Long Jacket, etc are mostly spoken-word. But if you listen through any CAKE album, you’d find that the majority of the vocal deliveries are more traditionally sung.

for example: in Fashion Nugget, i’d only really consider the tracks The Distance, Race Car Ya-Yas, and Nugget to be spoken-word. And those are 3 out of 14 tracks.

The new Michael movie has me thinking about just how fucking awesome that NSP UtC 3 cover of Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ could’ve been… Meouch woulda KILLED that bass!

sucks that (quite frankly, bullshit) ’documentary‘ came out, though i don’t blame Danny and Brian for wanting to just play it safe.
