Horror Subgenre Trends

I love horror and pay attention to a lot of the new releases, and am curious what others see as horror subgenres that are trending and/or will be trending?

For me, I see a lot of haunted house, psychological, and medieval horror gaining attention, I’ve also been noticing a lot of fiction with horror elements (that wouldn’t necessarily be shelved in the horror section but could be…).

What are you seeing?

What would you love to see more of?

For me, Post-Apocalyptic and aquatic horror. I’m also here for more Medieval horror…or horror with interesting settings/time periods.

EDIT:
Oh, and short story collections and anthologies! I’ve seen a lot more love for those!!

Favorite Covers of Forthcoming Horror Titles? What is catching your eye?

So curious to hear what horror covers are catching others attention? I feel like we're in the golden era of good covers for the genre. Some of mine:

A Deadly Blooming, Daphne Fama: Stunning artwork

Mother of Night by James Bennett: whatttt, this cover is top tier, and sign me up for medieval horror any time!!)

Kiss Slay Replay, Rachel Harrison: simple design, but fun. I love Rachel's book covers!

Hell to Pay, Kylie Lee Baker: the deluxe edition. Can't wait to read.

Tapeworm, AP Thayer: I think we're about to see a lot more cool af yellow horror covers. Those sprayed edges!!

Shortwave's VHS series (and recent re-design). Love a throwback and I already own a few of these.

The Henchperson's Guide to Unionizing, Marshall J. Moore: sprayed edges with a cute little creature feature...this one sounds like a romp.

The Ship of Death, Kyle Winkler: love this cover!

Recent cover reveals that caught my eye: Welcome Home, Mariam, Sanchita Mitra and Ana Must Die (Again), EJ Green.

How about you?

Best Horror Reads of 2026 So Far?

I'm in a horror reading spiral and was curious what your top five or so favorite recent horror releases you've loved. I'm open to most horror and curious what everyone is reading and loving. My top recent favs include:

  • TAPEWORM, AP Thayer , most unexpected horror novel of 2026 and so happy I got to read this one before it comes out next month. Horny, gory, and perfect vibes for the heat wave (it's set in the fictional town of Superstition, CA). I need a follow-up to learn more about the worm lore. I think this is perfect for anyone who likes a trippy story or a book that reviewers will say "what the f*** did I just read"
  • A PLAGUED SEA, Kim Bo-Young - short and sweet, I did find the ending a dash rushed here, but the sea and isolated vibes of this just hit me. This unexpectedly had a lot of heart. I love anything built around water horror, like THE BURIAL TIDE by Neil Sharpson, so perhaps I'm bias!
  • TRAD WIFE, Saratoga Schaefer, so unexpectedly good. I was not expecting this book to hit me so hard as I'm not in the know of the trad wife life, but this is a well-plotted and (at times) unhinged read
  • A BLACKENED HEART, A BLACKENED SOUL, John Ward - a bleak novel exploring grief, loss, and faith. After finishing I keep thinking about that ending. Very much looking forward to whatever Ward writes next.
  • THE EYES ARE THE BEST PART, Monika Kim- character-driven, I did NOT expect the ending but in hindsight maybe I should have! Ready to dive into Molka before the end of the year.

Outside of your favorites of 2026, are you seeing any specific trends in horror that you're loving (or not loving)?
