Lace socks finally done! Lace design my own (sharing the chart if anyone wants it)

Made in Bambu Raggi (fingering weight from Järbo) on 2.5mm needles.

Had to redo the top of the first one several times to tweak the pattern. What I learned ...

  • For those columns of eyelets to work, I had to switch out which side the YO was every other row
  • Because of the extra eyelets, the motif needed to be "off center" in the layout, since the top one is nestled right between the two bottom ones, making a pyramid (or rosebud shape)
  • The look is probably slightly different if you do it in a bottom-up style. This chart is read from the top and down because I made the sock top down

But, while there was a lot of frustration (and some tediousness at the end ...) I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Lace socks of my own design (done with sweat, curse words, loud yelling and lots of cat hair <.<)

Bambu Raggi by Järbo, fingering weight on 2.5mm needles, with eye of partridge heel and princess sole.

The lace I had to figure out in steps, and I frogged (in screaming frustration a couple of times >.>) it several times, to make the columns of eyelets line up, and the motif to be centered. But I did it, and I now understand lace a lot better!

Cabled socks for my spouse

Since I've figured out the sizing and base features of the socks, I'm now doing my own patterns. This one has two simple cables running along the front, and I'm pretty pleased with it.

Heel is eye of partridge slip stitch heel, yarn is two shades of Järbo Bambu Raggi (50% SW wool, 25% polyamid, 25% bamboo).

Trying to figure out if what I think I did wrong is actually it (if not, what did I do?)

So, first of all ... I've frogged the offending bit and redone it all, so it's all good, but I'm still not entirely sure what I did wrong and want to make sure I don't repeat it.

As I got to the end of a round (I'm working on a sock, this was the ribbing) I noticed that one stitch looked weirdly enlarged. I dropped it and laddered it up (which tends to be one of my go-tos when a stitch looks weird), but that didn't solve it. So I dropped the one next to it ... and realised that instead of a "bar" of yarn between stitch A (the last of the round, which I had laddered up) and stitch B (the first of the round), a loop was sticking out of stitch B.

My theory is that I accidentally turned the work, but since it was at the beginning/end of the round it wasn't a short row and didn't visibly screw anything up (apart from that slightly enlarged last stitch). Does that sound likely, or is there another explanation for it?

When one decides to run before one tries walking; or: "charting ones own lace"

I'm wanting to experiment with lace for the next pair of socks for me, but for Reasons :tm: I don't want to buy (or use a free) pattern. I had been watching a bunch of pointelle knits, so decided that obviously I can chart my own. I mean, how hard can it be, right?

So, this is my test swatch, fingering weight yarn on 3mm needles. We have columns of a rosebud pattern, offset, (which I found on youtube but adapted a bit) separated by columns of eyelets. For this flat swatch I have a three stitch wide garter border, and the first and last stitch of the pattern (to get some semblance of symmetry) is twisted for a teeny tiny cable.

I am glad I charted it out, I'm glad I tested it out, and I'm looking forward to learning how many inventive curse words I've absorbed through the years as I work on actually making it <.<

Making a sock with colourwork, my first real attempt

So, my next experiment with socks is colourwork. I have come to the conclusion that the yarn I have right now is perhaps a "tad" too subtle for it (hence the chart so you can see what it's supposed to be <.<), but I'm pretty pleased with it and wanted to pat my own back a bit. I think the floats are long enough, and once I got the hang of holding both yarns on one finger it went decently well.

I had to restart it once, though. After I got through the first round, I realised that I had twisted alll my stitches (something I generally don't do), because apparently my brain didn't compute that it is, in fact, the same movement when working with two yarns as one.

(yarn is Järbo Bambu Raggi, 2mm needles for most of the leg, 2.5mm for the colourwork. Pattern is a vanilla sock with motifs from "150 Scandinavian Knitting Designs" by Mary Jane Mucklestone)

Think I've nailed the size now

For me, using Järbo Bambu Raggi (50% SW wool, 25% each of bamboo and polyamid). 2mm needles for the leg, 2.5mm for the foot. Heel flap and gusset, with eye of partridge reinforcement on the heel and a standard wedge toe. Sole is a princess sole (reverse stockinette), since my feets are very sensitive when it comes to walking on purl bumps, I've found out.

Long socks for my spouse

Working on perfecting the size, the leg is knit with 2mm needles and the rest with 2.5mm. Eye of partridge heel flap (and turn), made in bambu raggi (bamboo sock yarn) from Järbo. Hopefully they are both long enough and tight enough to stay up when he wears them with his boots.

I do a lot of socks, and for myself I really enjoy the princess sole (reverse stockinette). What I've noticed is that the last knit stitch before the purl section is enlarged/loose (which I understand is normal). It's not something that bugs me super much ... but if there's an easy-ish way to at least minimize it a bit?

I've tried searching (which is where I got the explanation for why it's larger), but my search-fu seems to fail me, maybe because I don't know how to put it in a way that others have. Should I do something differently with that last (and first on the other side, but that one doesn't have this issue) stitch? I'm fine with having something that looks like a "border", if that helps even things out.

Just finished the next pair for me, and so pleased! I use eye of partridge in a flap-and-gusset heel with a wedge toe and princess sole, most of it knit with 2.5mm and the ribbing in 2mm.

The yarn is discontinued, I got it as a gift from my sister's family years ago (one ball of black, two balls of the striped yarn), and as it turns out: assuming I make heels/toes/ribbing in a contrast yarn, 50g/400-410m is quite enough for a pair of socks for me, so I'll be able to make a second pair of these later (my next pair is for my spouse, to see if changing to knitting the leg with 2mm needles will make it a more perfect fit around there, or if I'm needing to rework the math ...)
