Kombucha Fail

First fermentation was done with black tea, and it developed mold. Mold was seen on day 7-8 of the fermentation both times. I don't know what I am doing wrong?!
I’m fermenting it in a kitchen cupboard/dark space. I sterilized the jars by placing them in hot water before starting.
The first time, I used a metal cap and burped the jar almost every day. I also sanitized my hands before burping it. The second time, I covered the jar with a muslin cloth instead.
What’s confusing me is that I used the same jar and the same process in Pokhara, and it worked fine. I’m now doing it in Kathmandu, and I’ve gotten mold twice. Could this be due to differences in temperature, humidity, water quality, or something else about the environment in Kathmandu? Or is there something in my process that I’m overlooking?
What would you check or change first?

Planning a family trip to the Andaman Islands in late October, would love some itinerary advice!

We’re planning a family trip to the Andaman Islands in late October and would love some input on our itinerary.

We’re planning to arrive early in the morning on October 24 and are considering staying at Tilar Siro by CGH Earth on Havelock Island. Our initial thought is to stay there for 5 days and use Havelock as our base for water activities and day trips, since we’d rather not keep changing hotels and moving around too much with the family.

We fly back on October 29, so we have roughly 5 nights/6 days.

A few things we’re wondering about:

  • Does it make sense to spend the entire trip based in Havelock, or should we split the stay between Havelock and Port Blair?
  • We really want to visit Cellular Jail and see the light and sound show. Would it be better to stay one night in Port Blair for this, either at the beginning or end of the trip?
  • Are there any must-do activities or day trips from Havelock that we shouldn’t miss?
  • Is 5 days on Havelock too long, or is there enough to keep the family occupied without feeling rushed?
  • Any tips regarding ferries, weather, or water activities in late October would also be really helpful. Some of us really want to scuba, snorkel, and do the bioluminescence kayaking

We’re travelling with family, so we’re prioritizing a comfortable, relatively relaxed itinerary rather than trying to pack in too much.

Would love to hear what you’d do differently!
