M27A1 or PiP Concept

The M27 has been in use by the USMC for the past 15 years and for all purposes it seems very well liked and the external piston system fits well with amphibious operations at the cost of more weight forward.

The overall weight, however, seems to be an issue.

It is now 2026 and HK has done several updates to their 416 product line.

Just throwing ot a hypothetical discussion: What can/should the USMC consider for updating their existing IARs?

Some components and concepts that I think will remain:

  1. Existing upper and lower receivers

  2. 16.5" barrel for velocity

  3. Bayonet mount

Some parts for consideration:

  1. Change the handguard to the 10.5" 416A5 QD. The 13-15" wouldn't allow for a bayonet.

  2. Change the stock to something lighter.

  3. M-LOK vertical grip

  4. Something more modern than a Harris bipod

  5. Change the charging handle to the ambi one.

  6. Possibly an ambi safety selector

  7. Possibly an ambi magazine release

  8. Does anything he the handguard, grip or stock come with an FDE treatment? Or just future rails and grip covers.

Love for a discussion, what am I missing?

Barrel nut spacer instead of grinding off alignment tabs?

Hi all, I've know about the GAU-5A platform for a few years, but I have renewed interest after building a 10/22 TD and seeing the rescue on the news.

I am probably going to have plenty of questions as I fugure out what I want.

Regarding the handguard fitment, I have seen the posts about how the G4 requires its alignment tabs removed and a flush face to the plate.

Instead of doing that, could you put in a barrel nut spacer (thick shim) to move the barrel nut a bit off the plate and then attach the handguard.

It looks a little like the G3's do this and they dont sit flush.
