How I Visited Factories in China, Still Overpaid, and Now Need a Trusted Sourcing Agent
Hi everyone,
I’ve been importing bathroom products for several years and distribute sanitaryware in Morocco. My main products are toilets, wash basins, faucets, LED mirrors, bathtubs, and bathroom accessories.
Last year, I attended the Canton Fair hoping to find reliable manufacturers. At first, everything looked promising. Many suppliers claimed they were factories with “top quality” products and highly competitive prices.
After narrowing down a few suppliers, I traveled to their cities to visit them in person. Some were legitimate factories, but like many importers, I learned that what you see during the visit and what you receive later are not always the same.
The quality was generally acceptable, but in several cases it didn’t fully justify the price I paid.
I hired an inspection agent to check the goods before shipment, and that turned out to be one of the best decisions I made.
During the inspection, they found a significant number of items with serious manufacturing defects. Rejecting those products before shipment saved me from potentially costly problems once the goods arrived in Morocco.
They also identified some products with minor cosmetic issues or imperfect finishes. Since these defects were relatively easy and inexpensive to fix locally, the supplier agreed to offer those items at 50% of the original price.
Overall, the inspection saved me a considerable amount of money and helped me make better decisions about which products were worth accepting.
Then came the most frustrating part.
Once WeChat started understanding what I was searching for, I began seeing ads and recommendations for what appeared to be the exact same products at half the price.
That leaves you with a constant question:
Did I actually buy from the right factory, or did I overpay significantly?
This year, I’m planning to attend KBC Shanghai, since it is much more specialized in kitchen and bathroom products than the Canton Fair.
My goal is to build long-term relationships with truly competitive manufacturers offering a strong balance of quality and price.
So I’d love to get advice from people with real experience:
- Have you worked with a sourcing agent specialized in sanitaryware and bathroom products?
- Can anyone recommend a trustworthy agent who can:
- Identify real factories (not trading companies)
- Benchmark prices objectively
- Arrange factory visits
- Negotiate with suppliers
- Conduct thorough quality inspections
- Is it better to hire an agent before attending KBC Shanghai, so they can help pre-select factories and schedule visits?
- Any lessons learned when sourcing toilets, faucets, LED mirrors, bathroom furniture, or accessories in China?
I’m not looking for the cheapest products on the market. I’m looking for reliable factories that offer the best value for money and can become long-term partners.
Any recommendations, personal experiences, or warnings would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
