I have read some posts about how GIC is limited to specific countries, but I don't see limitations on most of the bank websites. As of now, is there a country limitation or can any accepted international student open a canadian bank account and participate in GIC before getting into Canada?

Also, if there is no country limitation, does doing a GIC with enough funds improve the acceptance odds?

I am doing Georgia Tech's online masters in computer science in my year after finishing my bachelors. I'm mainly doing this to build my machine learning and computing fundementals, and to also make the best of my "gap year". I'm thinking of applying to thesis based econ masters in Canada in order to get research experience and be eligible for future Phd opportunities. These two together would give me a good profile for this, but I'm wondering if I'll be rejected for a permit because I'm enrolled in the online one, even though the two programs are fundementally different and serve me different purposes. I would be able to take a low load or even take a leave of absence for the online master while doing the latter.

Did anyone have a similar situation? What do you think my chances would be for being given a permit? Thank you.
