Rejected for a job downtown
Not sure if this belongs on this sub, but I wanted to get r/MapleRidge ‘s take on what just happened to me, since I live here and never experienced this!
I’m searching for a job for the first time since 2019, and thru Indeed I find a sales job in downtown Vancouver. I know the commute would suck, but the job pays really well and there’s no reason for me to believe I couldn’t thrive in the role.
For the past few days I’m texting with the company’s HR and we land on having a 15 minute phone interview earlier today. We have a decent chat for like 2 minutes, and they ask whereabouts in the lower mainland I live. I tell them Maple Ridge, and that I understand it’s not a close commute, but i’m extremely punctual and don’t mind a long drive for the right job.
The conversation/vibe completely dies - the hiring manager (who is on speaker with the HR lady), tells me that they have staff from Surrey who complain about the commute. They tell me my commute will be 2+ hours to and from, how I would need to leave home at 6AM daily just for a chance to arrive on time, and immediately give me the “thanks for your time & good luck”.
Am I crazy for applying to a job in Vancouver? Have any of you had a call like that where you’re insta-rejected just because of the distance? I feel like i’m not being unreasonable for applying to a job downtown, and shouldn’t be rejected just for that reason.
EDIT: I've seen people in the comments rightfully question the validity of the job. From what I gathered from google reviews, BBB and some light research pre-interview, they seem fully legit and offer real services. Not some pyramid scheme scam "job", which I see a lot of on Indeed. I'm being really vague just because I would hate to out them as a bad business, even though my personal experience sucked.
