Fireworks from across the bay
Hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing Sunday after the festivities yesterday.

Hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing Sunday after the festivities yesterday.
Most of my beds look like the first two pictures. Then there is the bed in picture three. I’ve done everything the same in all three beds. The third bed receives slightly more sun than the bed in the second picture. The third bed was exclusively peppers and basil last year so it’s even more surprising.
None of this is really an issue. It’s just thoroughly perplexing that one bed seems to be doing SO much better.
I had it all planned out. This is my third year and second with my raised beds.
Then I got a concussion this winter (stupid snow/ice). Which delayed getting my seedlings started.
Completely missed on my broccoli, cabbage and onions. That’s fine. We’ll do broccoli and cabbage for the fall. I managed a few radishes and heads of lettuce. My carrots germinated and then failed. Fall carrots it is.
The weeds… omg the weeds. It’s a jungle. We managed to clear about half the beds but I’ve learned a lot about what I’m going to do after this season to prepare to fight weeds next year. And the weeds on the mulch paths between the raised beds… God help me.
Also planned to have two new beds added, then our sewer line broke. Thankfully I was late on the new beds because they had to dig up EXACTLY where once of the beds would have been. This delayed me even further.
I’m in Virginia and I’ve finally over the last few weeks been able to get most of my plants in the beds. It’s taking me longer because my heat intolerance is slowing me down even more. I’m limited to early mornings and evenings. And now that it’s hot and sunny, transplant shock has been on another level even with hardening everything off. Trying to keep them cool and watered without overdoing it. My poor pepper plants aren’t happy.
And speaking of pepper plants. Started those late too and my seedlings are all stunted so I gave in and bought some plants at the farmers market.
Nevermind that I don’t even have my trellises up yet but at least I picked up the cattle panels to do so.
Right now I’m just thankful that we have a reasonably long growing season into the fall.
Democracy and my garden may be a disaster (so many weeds) but my unruly strawberry patch has been giving generously this week.
Believe it or not there is a raised bed under all of those strawberry plants. Severely underestimated just how quickly they would pursue total garden domination.
This bowl of fresh picked strawberries was a nice bit of therapy after the news today.
