Succession question?

Nevermo/atheist here. Fascinated by Mormon history but I still have some gaps in my knowledge…
Prior to Joseph Smith dying, was it well known in the religion that God would choose ANOTHER prophet after JS was gone? Was it communicated in texts during Joseph Smith’s lifetime, that there would be multiple prophets after him, that would be elected by a council of elders?

(And if there wasn’t, why do followers accept it as fact now?)

There’s an interesting thing happening in Mormon apologetics (and I’m nevermo atheist so if I have it wrong don’t hesitate to tell me) and that’s their strange desire to be seen as just like regular Christians

But then when they get called out on a difference, for example, their interpretation of the trinity, the first instinct is to push back and say how the other denominations incorrectly interpret scripture and how Mormons are, for lack of a better term “more full in the gospel”

So then the other denominations ARE NOT like them. And they admit it!

But yet they’re trying to argue to everyone who will listen that they ARE like other Christians

Also, there’s this bizarre tactic where, in order to argue that the Book of Mormon isn’t crazy and made up, they’ll expose how crazy and made up the Bible is in order to prove their point?

It’s a weird double speak that makes me feel like I’m going crazy sometimes

(Also it feels a bit nefarious to me…)
