Camp Snap 2 - Low Cost Full Spectrum Platform You Can DIY for Less Than $150

Hi everyone,

I don't know if I've ever actually posted here. But I initially got my start with a couple conversions I did with Kolari/LifePixel as well as two other users from here.

I unfortunately had to sell all of those cameras to cover some medical expenses for my wife and have been struggling to get back into it without paying an arm and leg to convert a body, buying filters and finding a camera I like, to convert.

So anyway, in comes the camp snap. Currently on sale for $60, it's IR Cut filter is over the front element of the lens, and to get access to full spectrum all you have to do is remove that filter. Sounds simple enough right? Well, here are some pros and cons currently.

Pros:

Cheap - You can find coupons to make it even less. I paid for $66 for my last order with various coupons shipped.

Easy to obtain.

Low Risk/High Reward

It's a really fun beater for black and white using 720~820+

Fun, worry free shooting.

Cons:

The DIY factor - if you don't have the tools, or the patience to do this yourself, you're gonna have a bad time.

Zero control over aperture, shutter speed, etc. it's spray and pray.

No raw output

Only reversible if you invest time and effort into fixing it.

I've documented my journey with messing with the camera here:

CS2 + Wide Angle Conversion + 720nm IR

Got to take it out this morning post mod. Again, sorry these aren't composition heavy, it was more of seeing the characteristics of the lens outside.

This ultra wide angle with R72 filter. There is some slight vignette from my step up ring & filter 30.5 -> 49mm, I actually don't mind it. Shooting into the sun with the new lens also has some interesting flaring. I think this won't be a huge issue if you grab one with an IR Cut, but overall I feel at this focal length is really cool! I have no idea what the equivalent would be.

Really dark skies can happen on this but I think the camera might be fighting a bunch of things since I've done a lot way out of it's intended purpose.

This is the standard BW filter with +2 Contrast changed on the .flt no edits other than changing the orientation.

For reference, lens is here: ultra wide lens

Wide Angle Conversion for Camp Snap 2

Hi everyone,

I mentioned here that I was going to try different lenses on the camera module to see if it was possible. So, to keep it short. Yes, and here's some notes:

  1. It's "mostly" reversible. Because the lens housing is an M8 screen mount you can try various other lenses available. Just remember that because there is no live view, calibration is time consuming. If you can mark the current depth the stock lens is set prior to removing to assist when reverting back.

  2. You'll need to ream out holes to accommodate the diameter of the new lens. The fisheye needs more room than the ultra wide.

  3. You can use this to get into full spectrum by simply ordering the lens variant without the IR Cut filter.

  4. Do it at your own risk, many many warranties will be voided at even the thought.

  5. The CS2 uses M8 lenses with a .35mm thread pitch. It's likely the original does as well.

  6. The wider you go, the more you'll need to remove or you'll experience vignette. By removing the front lens shade (pulls off) you'll be able to go as wide as you want with no problem. But you lose the ability to use front filter.

  7. The Telephoto should just drop in and you'd only need to calibrate focus, will likely not require reaming.

  8. Just using an external 30.5mm filter would likely be way easier unless you want to try something more in depth.

Links to where I the lenses are found in the link.

Image shown is the "Ultra Wide, with no IR filter. Think of it as doing the 0.5 setting on your phone, but with your camp snap.

GFX100RF - Over 1 Year Later

Hey everyone,

Realized that I've had my GFX100RF for over a year now. I ordered when it was announced and haven't looked back, have had no regrets. It's been my most used camera, my only real issue is deciding which gear I should hold on to.

The whole feel and experience reminds me of when I first got my X100S in 2013, really feel like I can express myself.

The only thing that'd make me jump ship from this body is if they release a 100R. Even if it had no IBIS, I'd still jump to it just for the versatility.

Post Full Spectrum "Conversion" Modded BW profile with R72 Filter

Hey everyone, I got outside today after tweaking the default BW profile for +2 Contrast and that's it.

So, this is all SOOC with the modded profile loaded.

I know compositionally these aren't anything amazing, but just more to show what it can do to foliage and B&W settings. I also haven't fixed focus on this thing, but I'm going to keep it as is.

Looking at the exif data, it's shooting wide open at ISO 100, and getting pretty fast shutter speeds, it's still soft because of the issues I mentioned in my previous thread.

Going to be grabbing some other IR filters to see what else I can do, and will continue to update as my other lenses come in.

Camp Snap 2 Infrared "Conversion"

Hi everyone,

For those of you who just picked up a Camp Snap 2. IR is definitely possible. But it should go without saying, do this at your own risk, you're voiding more than just your warranty here.

  1. Standard R72 filter over stock lens using B&W stock profile.

  2. Standard B&W filter taking the same shot.

  3. IR Hot mirror removed with R72 filter. Extra note: shot in V1 on accident and converted to B&W after. Probably will work better on standard B&W profile.

I'm also in the middle of doing more experiments and will share when I get a chance so you don't have to.

I tore apart my CS2 down to the sensor Tuesday night to see if it was possible to convert this to a full spectrum camera, it can, but without the ability to use RAW files you won't really get the best out of it you could but still a capable machine at an extremely low cost.

So! This is actually really easy mod. The hot mirror filter is a small piece of glass covering the front element. I broke it (on accident) as I was trying to push all of the elements out of the lens housing from the front out the back. The sensor itself has nothing over it.

Again proceed at your own risk.

So, there's no gentle way of doing it if you want. But you'll want to crack the front filter off from the sides so you don't scratch the glass it's protecting. If you looked at mine you'd see it's scratched to bits, but since the Camp Snap doesn't actually stop down, I don't believe you'll ever see it impact the quality.

You'll notice that post conversion the lens is looking softer in my photos, that's because I need to recalibrate it for focus, and that's as close as I could get indoors when putting it all back together.

I have some M8 lenses on order I'm going to try with this new CS2. I'll share more info when they come in.

An ultra wide no IR Cut filter

A Fisheye with no IR Cut filter

A telephoto with IR Cut.

If you get under the hood and remove the lens housing, you'll have to remove the glue first, keep in mind to measure the distance the lens is set at before you unglue and remove the lens, but you can also use this to get a closer focusing distance with your current CS.

Some notes on that:

If close focusing, screw in lens

If back focusing, unscrew lens

So, unscrew to get more macro focusing distance, but lose infinity focus.

If it's soft under normal use unscrew it until it appears to be in focus.

If you're interested what I noted and may be incorrect. It appears that it uses an M8 mount with 0.35 thread pitch. I can't confirm currently, but will update when I get my lenses in.

I ordered my lenses from here, proceed at your own risk.

Edit: I wouldn't call it a infrared conversion, but more of a "Full Spectrum" conversion. I'm leaving the title as-is though for visibility.

First Time Camp Snapper

This is actually my first Camp Snap, I grabbed a CS Pro for my nephew a few months back, loved the concept and when I heard about the CS2 launching and in this color, I was experiencing some retrovertigo, and had to get it.

I had to go under the hood to fix the filter mount that was off-kilter, decided to add some extra flair where I could for fun. Also managed to do a screw delete while I was at it.

Gonna try some more silly things later on if I feel like it.

Having a lot of fun with it, and looking forward to carrying it around without a care.
