Is telling HR you need 2-4 weeks to officially start okay for a role that needs to be filled ASAP?

Hi! I’ve received a job offer for my dream role as a librarian at a public library and I have been asked when I can start.

I’m in the middle of moving to the city where this new role is located and I am also still working at my current job, so I would need at least 2 weeks to wrap up over there, send in my official resignation letter, and finish moving the rest of my stuff to my new place.

The problem is: I know they need to fill the role QUICKLY. The person who was previously there unexpectedly left, and it’s at the biggest library in the city and state, so it should be filled ASAP. This entire process has gone so fast. I applied, was contacted in mere days, and then had phone and in-person interviews at a quicker rate than I’ve ever experienced before.

So my question is — is telling them that I need 2-3 or 2-4 weeks to start (or giving them a start date within that time frame) going to make me look like a less ideal candidate? Would they offer the role to someone else who can start on, say, this Monday? I really need this job and I would hate to jeopardize it.

Thank you!!

What questions are asked during an interview for a librarian role?

Hello! I’m prepping for an interview and wanted to know what kind of questions I should expect to be asked during an interview for a librarian role.

I’ve worked and volunteered in the circulation department for several years, so that’s where much of my expertise is, but I am very confident in my ability to move on up as a librarian! I have two relevant BS degrees and I’m currently pursuing my MLIS (this role doesn’t actually require an MLIS, just a degree in a related field, so I’m not concerned about not being educated enough) and I feel they’ve also prepared me very well. I know my supervisors & coworkers will give me glowing recommendations.

I just want to know what I should expect! I haven’t interviewed in quite some time.

Many thanks!

Edit: I meant to say this is for a public library!! I am exhausted lol

Edit (again): please do not recommend genAI tools to me. I am not interested in asking the plagiarizing misinformation machines for ‘help’ which is why I am consulting real people.

Shelving series!

Hello! I work in the circulation department and it has come to my attention that my coworker and I shelve fiction series a bit differently, so I wanted to see how other people approach this.

For everything else, I shelve the standard way (nothing comes before something….ignore a, an, the….etc), but I don’t alphabetize any series. For example, I recently shelved Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series in publication order, rather than starting with Breaking Dawn, book four, because it comes first in the alphabet. For authors that have different series, I keep them all together and sort by publication order for each series. My coworker does not so this and instead sorts everything by title, which I feel would be confusing for the patron, especially when the author has multiple lengthy series (like Brandon Sanderson and Jodi Taylor).

Does anyone else do this?

Was this normal for a pediatrician pelvic exam?

I’ve scoured the internet including some older Reddit posts, and wasn’t able to find an answer…so here I am.

I know it’s common for a pediatrician to visually check their patient’s genitalia during their yearly exam, but is it normal for them to *press* on the patients genitalia/general pelvic area?

I have no memory of my doctor ever taking a quick peek or anything, but she always pressed on my vulva and the area above it for a bit during the exam without telling me and without my parent or a nurse present.

I get that any sort of exam like this is bound to be awkward, especially for a kid, but it always made me so uncomfortable and I’m just wondering if it was weird or not. I’m in my mid twenties now and my gynecologist doesn’t touch me like that, which gives me pause, I won’t lie.

(I am not asking for medical advice.)

How long to hear back after application?

I applied to an urban library system as a library associate two weeks ago and my application still says “received” on their hiring website.

Usually, I assume that the employer isn’t interested after two weeks, but this is the biggest city in my state and one of the largest in my region, so I assume there were a lot of applicants; I don’t have any issue with being patient for this reason.

Is a 2+ week wait time normal for this field? Should I call? I’ve only been working in a library for about two years and I heard back within a week for my current job, but I work in a really small branch in a rural area so there were very few applicants.

Thanks in advance!! :)

Is telling the recruiter that you need 3-4 weeks before starting okay?

Hi! I’m currently interviewing for my dream role and I have full confidence I’ll be offered the position. For context, it’s in a public library.

Normally when I’m asked when I can start, I say 2 weeks. However, I’m in the middle of moving to that area (which HR knows about, I contacted them awhile ago asking about residency information) and would need some extra time to not only wrap up things at my current job and train someone else, but to complete my move.

Is telling them I need 3-4 weeks to officially start okay? I think I could get away with 3-3.5 weeks as well. I could totally do onboarding before my start date, if that makes a difference. I just don’t want to rush anything, nor do I want to seem indifferent to my potential future employer!

Thank you!!

Resume help, applying for a library associate position

Hello!

I'm applying for a library associate position at a library in my state and wanted to see if I could get some feedback on my resume!

I'm very passionate about this field but haven't consistently worked in libraries due to school, disability, and the pandemic. I'm mostly looking for feedback regarding the wording for my summary, formatting, that sort of thing!

(Note: the black borders are just from the screenshot, and the blacked-out info under the skills are just library databases/programs that are specifically used in my region)

Thank you :) Resume attached below.

EDIT: Thank y'all for your help! Updated resume (the single column one) is attached. I kept the artist info/undergraduate degree info because it is directly related to the department I'm applying to!

EDIT: Thank y'all for your help! Okay I’m on my phone and don’t know how to upload images normally but here’s the update! https://imgur.com/a/sBNqdkc

I cropped all my personal info so it’s just the relevant info I’ve been inquiring about. I reorganized it and was more specific about locations and titles! I promise they exist under my scribbles lol

I realize I unnecessarily combined information on my first few drafts, so I arranged them properly in this version.
