Philosophy Major/Applied Psych Minor Questions
Hey everyone! I'm an incoming transfer student for Fall 2026 and I'm trying to get any tips on my academic plan before I get there.
I'm planning to do the Philosophy BA (Ethics and Public Policy track) + Applied Psychology minor, with the goal of eventually going to grad school to become an LMFT (Marriage and Family Therapist). I've also heard that philosophy majors can actually stand out in MFT program applications since the background in ethics and critical thinking is pretty relevant to clinical work. Curious if anyone has found that to be true. And as a bonus, the EPP track keeps law school on the table as a future option if my plans ever shift.
Here's where I'm at:
- I'm transferring in with 4 philosophy courses already completed (Intro, Ethics, History of Modern, Phil of Religion), so I only need 9 upper-division Phil courses at UCSB to finish the major.
- I'm planning to apply for the Applied Psych minor in October and take 5 CNCSP courses over my two years.
- I'll also be taking Abnormal and Developmental Psych as recommended prereqs for MFT grad school
Has anyone here done the Philosophy major alongside the Applied Psych minor? How manageable was the workload? Any tips on the CNCSP courses or getting into the Applied Psych minor?
Also curious if anyone has gone the LMFT route after UCSB, or knows much about Antioch SB. Would love to hear from anyone on a similar path or who has advice for me as a transfer. Thanks!
