First time illustrator

I got reached out to help illustrate a children’s chapter book.

This man has never published anything before, it’s a book his late dad wrote and it’s very sentimental to him. He wants to see what I can do for an illustration, a friend recommended me to him.

He says he doesn’t want to pay anyone upfront because he’s not wealthy and again, it’s his first time. Im in love with creating, it’s not my main job. If it was a hit, that’d be amazing!!!! But I’m a 22 year old fresh out of college and I don’t expect anything from this, I just know I would enjoy doing it. There’s no pressure for timelines or anything.

Thoughts? I don’t know what to expect, what boundaries to set, I know nothing. I only draw and paint for myself, I’ve never done it for another person. This book has been picked up by 4 publishers interested in moving forward, so it has strong potential.

Apologies if this is poorly worded
