How can i not get bored while drawing?

Its really hard for me to draw more 1-2 hours because I'm easily unmotivated. I'm also trying to play music or podcast while drawing, but still my limit to draw is less than 2 hours. Can someone tell me to prevent this?

How to learn to be creative with your art?

I think I’ve gotten the hang of learning how to practice drawing and painting, but I don’t know how to practice being creative.

I think a lot of my art ideas are basic, I try to come up with ideas of my own but none of them interest me despite me purposefully trying to pick concepts and ideas I like. I always end up turning to Pinterest or art books and stealing an idea from there, and for some reason the ideas I pick from there is basic.

How do I create creative ideas from their head on their own? How can I make ideas that I actually like?

Any tips on how to get better at life studies without guidlines?

I’ve been trying to do life studies lately without using any guidlines but it’s starting to stress me out. Im afraid my art doesn’t look as structurally intact. Any tips?

How do I dispose of old alcohol markers?

i have some off brand alcohol markers from middle school (think copic markers). Like, a little over 200 or so. I just sorted through them today, shockingly around half of them still work just fine.

However, I’m not sure what to do with the other 100. I have them in a plastic bag right now, and I’m not sure if it’s safe to just throw them away in the trash normally because of the alcohol in them. Does anyone know if there’s a specific protocol to disposing alcohol markers? Tried googling but didn’t find anything, I live in the US if that matters

Desk Reccomendations

Curios what your desk setup in your studio is. I would like a space where I can work on the computer, but also, if I wanted a place to play, cut, journal, whatever, I don't have to use the computer, so maybe an L-shaped desk? What do you think?

My own art making me feel emotional?

So I'm making abstract art. 3 piece set

Theme is jungle, I was inspired by Rousseau and childrens books

I made some composition studies, value studies and color studies.

For the composition I chose cute shapes. Color study made me decide for cool colored greens.

So Im painting the imprimatura and I get hit with big feelings of grief and looking for closeness/intimacy.

Does anybody else get hit with feelings in the art process, even though everything is planned out?

How to switch from a painterly style to a more graphic one?

Basically i struggle a lot with making art that is more line focused. It's easier for me to put some random blobs of shapes and color and turn it into something more or less defined and rendered, or make a rough sketch and finish it by skipping the cleanup and lineart etc. I just like to mush paint around i guess

However, I don't really like the style i get. It's not terrible but I want to be more versatile and also be able to draw with more focus on lines, and stuff that doesn't have much rendering, like line drawings for a tattoo for example

I know the answer is just to practice practice practice but maybe someone has an idea of a smarter way to achieve this than just brute forcing it? like what exercises and studies could help with that, what could i change about my approach or just whatever suggestions that come to mind

because rn whenever i try to draw differently i don't make much progress or often revert back to old methods without realizing

Looking for Advice on PC for Digital Art

I am looking to get a new desktop computer, but I know nothing about specs and stuff... Is it a good idea to just buy a prebuilt one like an Ibuypower?

Mainly using it for csp, Blender (mostly for setting up 3D reference scenes), and maybe some gaming.

Is a $1500 budget sufficient? Any advice or specific models to look out for would be greatly appreciated!

Can't get past technical/perspective side of art

hey everyone!

I've reached certain proficiency in portraits and anatomy doing studies every single day and practicing gestures in class

But sadly the thing I can't get past is technical drawing (object, room and architecture)

Despite understanding perspective and having drawn multiple column, Stillife studies for assignments it's the one thing I just can't get a grasp on at all!!!

It's so frustrating because everyone around me claims it's the easiest darn thing but everything is so precise and supposed to be measured down the millimeter and I just can't deal with that+ I just don't understand and see the perspective like others I feel like.

Does anyone have advice (ofc practice) but maybe some resources?

Do you think artists should focus more on developing their own style, or learning to adapt their style to what clients actually want?

I’ve been going back and forth on this lately and would love to hear how other artists approach it.

What to do with a bad painting

When you paint something you don't like, what do you do with it?

I decided to cut one of mine up and laminate it to become bookmarks! In small pieces, it seems to work better.

Am I the only one getting randomly DM'd about being offered comissions?

This is the first time I was messaged about it on Reddit, but I've had an unusual amount of this happening on Discord too. They often randomly DM me while trying to spark up a casual conversation, being friendly, sharing personal info, then asking me about my writing, or my general interests. Then by the end of it, they let me know they're an artist who does coms (and more often than not, they have no activity on the mutual server, or the account is new, sometimes).

I had a conversation with one just now, but I've had... I'm not kidding, 5 seperate people coming to me on discord about that this entire year (and now its happened on Reddit!), sometimes appealing to the fact that I love to write and proposed to draw a book cover for my stories, and others for roleplay-based character like D&D and such.

What I'd like to know, is whether this an elaborate scam that's been going around, or real artists who are desperate for money they're resorting to DM'ing randoms?

Sorry in advance to the moderation team if this is the wrong sub to ask this question on, I've just been frustrated about this and wanted some answers about it if possible.

Is there a way I can get feedback about my art from professionals?

For context I've been learning the LoL splash art style and I simply don't know how to grow from the point I am. If anyone knows any subreddits, discord servers, courses or teachers that I could reach out to I'd really appreciate it. I'm in a few art spaces and I know that artcrit is available but I really want to get in contact with some pros that can break down everything I need to improve on and point out things I might miss

After 20+ Years and Hundreds of 5-Star Reviews, My Art Studio Finally Got a Bad Review. I’m Proud of Why We Got It

And I’m proudly sharing it.

Not because it’s a bad review, but because of why I received it.

The reviewer wrote:

“I liked this site to learn about pottery and today they posted a big controversial political post. Please keep the politics out of the arts!”

She gave it a two-star rating, even though she acknowledged that she liked the content and had found it helpful. Her objection was to a political view I had expressed.

My response:
“Throughout history, artists have done more than create beautiful things. They have challenged injustice, questioned power, responded to war and oppression, and helped shape society’s conscience.

That responsibility feels especially important today, when misinformation, division, and the erosion of people’s rights and dignity are very real concerns. When truth and basic human decency are threatened, I don’t believe artists should be expected to remain silent.

What I do as an artist is enormously important to me, but not more important than my conscience. If standing for truth, human dignity, equal rights, and compassion comes with a personal or professional cost, that is a price I am willing to pay.”

__________

You are free to disagree with my politics. But asking an artist to “keep politics out of the arts” raises a much larger question for me, and I’m curious how other artists see it.

Should artists separate their political and social convictions from their public identity as artists?

And when speaking publicly about something you believe is wrong may come with consequences, do you speak anyway?

Casein - the closest paint to digital art

I just wanted to espouse my new favorite medium. If you're a concept artist, coming from digital art, or are just wanting an alternative to gouache, I'd highly recommend trying casein paint.

Back in the Rockwell days, casein actually used to be one of the, if not *the* most popular paint for illustrators. It even competes with oil paint in finish/handling (see John Berkey's portfolio for examples). It lays down like gouache - you can do washes or opaque passages. You have a window to scrub/rework the paint if needed. Unlike gouache, you can glaze and layer with ease. After around a couple days, casein will cure and be even stronger than many oil paintings.

I started with oil, then went to gouache. When I eventually left digital art behind and decided to go all traditional, it's very frustrating to lay down my large studio paintings with gouache. Casein pretty much solved all those problems for me, and it's extremely cheap in comparison.

If you've heard of casein, I'd definitely go try it. I always thought it was some weird boutique medium until I actually started using it.
