Weekly Artist Spotlight: Newspaper Taxis (Rock)

Weekly Artist Spotlight: Newspaper Taxis (Rock)

Artist: Newspaper Taxis
Genre(s): Rock
Hometown: Raleigh
Years active:  Since 2021
For fans of: Big Star, The Beatles, The Replacements, REM, Elliott Smith
Upcoming show(s): Slims in Raleigh on August 21 at 8 PM
Advice to aspiring musicians: “Try to write your own songs and don’t get discouraged when the first hundred that you write stink because that’s normal.”

Newspaper Taxis writes catchy, energetic songs that are hard not to tap your foot to. They blend the hooks and immediacy of power pop with their own mix of indie rock, garage rock, and Americana, creating a sound that feels both familiar and distinct. With strong hooks, memorable melodies, and a sense of purpose, Newspaper Taxis showcases an impressive aptitude for songwriting that makes them stand out in the Raleigh music scene. After capturing snippets of lyrical ideas in the voice app, the band will experiment with chords on acoustic guitar or instrumental tracks and improvise melodies until something takes shape.

The band loves playing Cats Cradle Backroom in Carrboro, but appreciates the variety of music venues across the Triangle.  They recommend people listen to Jupiter 2, who was featured in an artist spotlight a few weeks back.

Check out their latest album, Taxis II, now on spotify.

Weekly Artist Spotlight: ColorMeKrazy! (Electronic Alt Rock)

Artist: ColorMeKrazy!
Genre(s): Electronic Alt Rock
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
Years active: 3
For fans of: Attack Attack!, Enter Shikari, and Waterparks.
Upcoming show(s): August 20, 2026 – The Den, Winston-Salem – 8:00 PM (Tickets: https://www.ticketsource.com/theden/the-hollow-souls-tour/e-gleebk) and August 22, 2026 – Reggie's, Wilmington – 8:00 PM

Advice to aspiring musicians: “Get involved in your local music scene. It leads to connections that make it easier to find bandmates, book shows, and build lasting friendships with people who share your passion.”

ColorMeKrazy! sounds like what you'd get if you mashed together the pop-punk, metalcore, and post-hardcore bands of the 2000s and 2010s, then layered modern electronic elements on top.  Mia, Tom, and Drew write music that feels both fresh and nostalgic, drawing inspiration from the early 2000s and integrating their sound with electronic production and textures.

The band, like many other Triangle outfits, has found lasting success at local venues, even selling out a show in Raleigh, and are now traveling and performing outside of the triangle.  When asked about other local artists they would recommend, ColorMeKrazy! namedropped the following: FoundiT, Moving Boxes, Weymouth, The Wild, and Hemlock Theory.

Music Venues that Host Local Bands

I created this table to help local musicians book gigs in the Triangle. I've compiled a list of triangle (and triangle adjacent) venues that showcase local bands and artists. This list does not include bigger music venues like PNC, the Ritz, and Motorco that primarily host touring bands with the occasional local support. I've included a contact for booking but please check the venue's website for specific details to include. There is a column for primary genres that the venue commonly books, but don't let that discourage you from reaching out anyway. I hope this helps, and as always, leave a comment if I missed any locations that consistently book local artists and I'll include it here!

Weekly Artist Spotlight: Jupiter 2 (Electronic Pop)

Artist: Jupiter 2
Genre(s): Electronic Pop
Hometown: Chapel Hill / Durham
Years active: 8
For fans of: Sweet Trip, Animal Collective, George Clanton, MGMT
Upcoming show(s): Easy Talk in Winston-Salem on August 7 and Neptunes in Raleigh on August 31

Advice to aspiring musicians: “Wear earplugs!”

Self-described as atmospheric guitar music for raves, Jupiter 2 is the brainchild of Nick and Ian who met as coworkers in a music store and started recording music on a Tascam 4-track cassette.  Their shared love of Beatles, Beach Boys, and Animal Collective has guided their vocal harmony and pop sensibility prevalent in their aesthetic, which often start as simple guitar or synth loops in Reason that evolve into layers of sounds and expand into new sections with semi-improvised vocal melodies.  The duo never writes songs with a genre in mind, leading to unique sonic amalgamations of all-over-the-place influences and vibes.

The band enjoys performing at Berkeley Café for their welcoming crowd and relaxed atmosphere, and recommends the triangle community to also listen to local artists Lucid Amethyst and I.T.S.

Check out their latest album, Bliss Artifact, now on bandcamp and spotify.

Weekly Artist Spotlight: Georgia Moon & The Wrong Band (Americana)

Artist: Georgia Moon & The Wrong Band
Genre(s): Southern Rock/Americana
Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC
Years active: 4
For fans of: Jefferson Airplane, Allman Brothers Band
Upcoming show(s): The Cave at Chapel Hill on July 31 at 9 PM
Advice to aspiring musicians: “Practice does make perfect, but the reality is that perfection is unattainable. Get out there if you can and be yourself in every moment you create.”

Frontwoman and Bassist Georgia Moon is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter who has been playing with The Wrong Band since 2022. Her music draws on childhood influences including late '60s/early 70s folk rock, San Francisco psychedelia, and the ever-pervasive blues. Equally important, her music is heavily rooted in sentimental places such as the Mississippi Delta and the Appalachian Mountains, exuding a sense of hominess in every song she writes. She and The Wrong Band are in the 'little bit swampy, little bit swing' genre, but above all, their music is honest - and there's something to be said for being in the wrong place at the right time and still having fun.

Georgia’s musician father impressed on her the importance of playing music that people can dance to, which has guided her song-writing process to meld her poetry-like lyricism with flowing rhythms and challenging vocal melodies.  Georgia Moon and the Wrong Band have performed in all 3 corners of the Triangle, and recommend people also check out Jodi Jones & Sugaree String Society, Certain Seas, and Sosha Rockwood.

Weekly Artist Spotlight: LaureNicole (Alternative Rock)

Artist: LaureNicole
Genre(s): Alternative Rock
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
Years active: 7
For fans of: The Cranberries, Foo Fighters, Vertical Horizon, Alanis Morissette
Upcoming show(s): Bond Brothers Eastside in Cary on July 31 and The Sun and Her Daughters Festival at The Back Yard Bar in Apex
Advice to aspiring musicians: “Never write music that doesn’t authentically represent who you are as an artist.  Your true fans are the ones that connect with you and your most genuine honest self.”

Hailing from Raleigh, LaureNicole is a female-fronted alt-rock band blending powerhouse vocals with '90s-inspired, Cranberries-esque grit. Their latest EP, Preserve Love Here, showcases emotionally charged lyricism, infectious pop-rock hooks, and soaring guitar solos, making them one of the Triangle's most compelling live acts.

Each member offers different influences to create a unique sound. Vocalist and Song writer Lauren channels Jenna McDougall of Tonight Alive to showcase a unique vocal style, melodic instinct, lyric writing, and positive energy at live performances, while Lead Guitarist Rhet draws heavily from Kansas. Zack, the bassist, emulates the groove-driven style of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, giving each song a strong rhythmic foundation, while Jim's drumming is energetic and dynamic, inspired by players like Matt Cameron and Taylor Hawkins.

LaureNicole’s vulnerable songwriting that candidly touches on subjects like mental health, healing, and self-worth creates an emotional connection with audiences, especially at live shows which have once been described as “an out-of-body experience”.  Their goal has always been to make music that reminds people they aren't alone, and they craft their performances to feel welcoming, inclusive, and full of positive energy, where anyone can come as they are and feel like they belong.

LaureNicole loves how supportive the triangle music scene is and encourages everyone to check out local musicians Scarlet Tantrum, Whoop, Kitt Ramble, Cole Spade, Story Charlemagne, Jared Place, Lady Jane Grey, Kid Alumni, Bright Modern, and Emma Rae.

Weekly Artist Spotlight: Lennon KC (Alternative Rock)

Artist: Lennon KC
Genre(s): Alternative Rock
Hometown: Durham, NC
Years active: 2
For fans of: Dominic Fike, The Backseat Lovers, Red Hot Chili Peppers
Upcoming show(s): Trainyard in Raleigh on July 17^(th) at 7 PM and Moon Dog Meadery in Durham on July 18^(th) at 6:30 PM
Advice to aspiring musicians: “There’s no wrong way, there’s only your way: keep going.”

Lennon KC is a DIY alternative rock project with a sound that flows between grunge-inspired intensity and gentler introspective moments.  With a captivating stage presence heavily inspired by the theatrics of Twenty-One Pilots, he writes and performs music that is unapologetically raw, expressive, and vulnerable.

Growing up in big music household that loved attending live shows, Lennon KC discovered songwriting in his early 20s after teaching himself guitar, and what started as a secret hobby quickly evolved into a calling. Through years of writing, busking, and performing, he's found purpose, freedom, and community in making music.

Releasing his debut album in 2025, Lennon's 'Manic Pixie Dream Boy' navigates selfhood with a soundscape featuring 90’s grunge, indie rock, & bedroom pop with a folk sensibility. Listen now on all music streaming platforms now.

Lennon recommends the triangle music community to also check out his colleague, Austin Avery aka, lilcheetuh.

Weekly Artist Spotlight: Bedroom Division (indie pop/rock)

Artist: Bedroom Division
Genre(s): Indie pop/rock
Hometown: Greensboro, NC
Years active: 3
For fans of: The 1975, wave to earth, Bleachers
Upcoming show(s): The Eagle’s Dare in Wilmington, NC on Sunday July 12 at 7 PM
Advice to aspiring musicians: “Don't underestimate the power of social media! It is the number one way to get your music to new ears. Even if your videos aren't going viral and getting a few hundred views per video, that's still a few hundred people that are being exposed to your music. Don't be afraid to be cringe.”

Boasting mellow, woozy and romantic shimmer pop vibes from Greensboro, Bedroom Division is the recording project from songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dylan Wishon. Fusing chill, home grown indie rock with polished pop production and nostalgic synths, he crafts soundscapes inspired by well known artists such as Mac DeMarco, Djo, Bleachers, and The 1975.  Wishon blends dream pop with jazz, indie rock, and synth-pop to achieve a unique genre-bending sound that is less common than most indie acts.

Wishon started making beats on his laptop in high school as a hobby, but around 2017-2018, the bedroom pop wave with artists like Clairo, Boy Pablo, and Cuco inspired his solo project called, Bedroom Division, and now he intermittently tours.  When asked to recommend another local artist that deserves more recognition, Wishon said, “Lennon KC is a triangle artist that I look up to and draw so much inspiration from, one of the most creative live acts I've seen in NC.”

Check out Bedroom Division’s debut album, “Idle Hands”, on all music streaming platforms now.

Best vegan cheese/gluten free pizza in Durham?

We've tried the one at mellow mushroom and were disappointed. Crust was too thin and chewy. The cheese texture was too much like cream cheese and didn't have that satisfying cheese pull. I know a vegan cheese/gluten free pizza is essentially an Italian abomination...but what restaurant or chain sells the closest thing to real pizza? Thanks in advance
