Then she sees the wolves. Or things that only look like wolves.
She races them back to the ranch. Somehow she knows that hiding indoors will offer no protection.
She has to fight.
Will she survive?

Sometimes Amara wishes she weren’t quite so good at her job. This murder has the police stumped. And no wonder, because it appears the murder weapon is a type of handgun not seen in centuries. So much for a quick consult. This signals trouble she doesn’t need.

In the grimy lower levels of Shadewire, an Alley Rat finds a moment to unwind. A battered recliner, and a cheap vape aren’t much, but they’re all hers. She gazes at the upper levels and dreams of everything she will never have.

She has seen many stormy nights in Shadewire. But there’s something different about this night. The air feels sharper, the rain somehow colder. And she can almost predict where the lightning will flash.

In the dark, claustrophobic lower levels of Shadewire, sunlight barely penetrates, the air is damp and foul, and power outages are a daily occurrence. She braves the wind and the rain just for a momentary escape from the suffocation
