Found a hidden gem Ryokan in Nishi-Izu, Japan! "Banjou-ya" offers amazing seafood and authentic hot springs. ♨️🐟

Hello everyone! I recently stayed at a traditional guesthouse (Minshuku) called "Banjou-ya" in Kumomi Onsen, Nishi-Izu, and it was absolutely fantastic. To my surprise, a massive boat-wrap of fresh sashimi and a whole simmered splendid alfonsino (Kinmedai) were included as standard! The natural hot spring (Onsen) was super authentic and rejuvenating. If you're exploring the Izu Peninsula and want a truly local, warm experience with incredible food, I highly recommend booking directly with them. Check out my full review with photos on my blog! [Trip Report] Exploring the Hidden Gem of West Izu: Dogashima Tombolo & Tenso-do Cave (Yuru Camp Spot!)

Hey everyone! I recently took a road trip around the West Izu Peninsula and wanted to share one of my favorite stops: Dogashima.

If you're looking to escape the crowded tourist spots like Atami or Ito and want something more relaxing with incredible nature, West Izu is definitely the place to go.

Here are a few highlights from my visit:

🌋 Dogashima Tombolo (Sehama Coast)

  • What it is: A rare natural phenomenon where a 30-meter-wide gravel path appears between the mainland and Sanshiro Island during low tide, allowing you to walk across the ocean!
  • Geological wonders: The island features amazing columnar jointing (hexagonal basalt rock formations) formed by ancient submarine volcanic activity millions of years ago.
  • Anime connection: Anime fans might recognize this exact spot from Yuru Camp (Laid-Back Camp) Season 2 / Vol. 9 during the Izu camping arc!

🌊 Tenso-do Cave & Sunset Plaza Dogashima

  • I was super excited to take the excursion boat to explore the glowing blue waters inside the "Tenso-do" sea cave, but unfortunately, all boats were canceled due to typhoon waves!
  • Instead, I walked up to the Sunset Plaza (which has free parking!) and took the walking trail. You can actually look down directly into the skylight hole of the sea cave from above. The crystal-clear emerald blue water from that height was still breathtaking.

If you're planning a trip to Shizuoka or driving around the Izu Peninsula, I highly recommend adding Dogashima to your itinerary!

I wrote a detailed blog post with more photos, driving advice, and geo-park lore. Feel free to check it out if you're interested:
