New West Tenants Union Publishes Summary of Housing/Rental Actions of Every Incumbent Over the Last 4 Years

As part of our election project this year, we formed a volunteer research team that personally watched every single city council meeting in the last 4 years in which housing or rental issues were discussed. They then documented the stances, arguments, and votes of every single candidate currently running for re-election.

The results are 36 page document which you can find our election page: https://nwtenantsunion.org/nwtu-election-2026/

In the next day or two we'll be publishing a shorter PowerPoint summarizing the results which will be used at candidate grading event this week where our members will rank candidates based on this research as well as answers to some questions sent to every candidate.

The research team did their best to only report factually on what candidates said or did without any inferences about intent or judging whether their stances were good or bad. The goal is to have our members make those decisions when they submit rankings for the final report card.

Anyway, we thought members of this community might be interested in these preliminary research results. We can share the PowerPoint and final member-ranked report card when they're ready as well.

New Westminster Tenants Union Public Meeting

Any renters are welcome to join us at the New West Public Library this Tuesday August 25th at 630 pm for our monthly meeting. This time around we're gearing up for the municipal election that will take place October 17th.

We'd like to invite you and your neighbours to come and decide which questions we'll be presenting to candidates on our renter report card. City council members and the mayor decide what bylaws and standards landlords must abide by in rental buildings.

We, alongside other community members have already pressured them to pass a cooling policy and a tenant relocation policy for people affected by demolition of older, more affordable rental stock. But we're not done. We also want to continue to create better living standards that affect nearly half of the city's population, which are renters. We're also planning to attend a city council meeting next month to show that renters are an important voting block that candidates for elected office should pay attention to.

Come by and meet us and other renters and learn more about the volunteer work we're doing in New Westminster this Tuesday!

New West Tenants Union Monthly Meeting

We're inviting tenants to join us at our monthly meeting this Tuesday July 28th at 630pm at the New West Public Library. We will give an update on our direct actions in the community including our first official tenants association in a senior’s building and the passing of the tenant relocation policy this month, which means people can stay in their neighbourhoods at the same rents when older buildings are demolished to build new ones.

As the municipal elections approach in October, we're preparing to mobilize renters to attend a city council meeting on September 21st to show that renters are a large voting block and that we have concerns about how potential new city officials may vote on renters rights. Along those lines, we also have an ongoing project to inform renters about incumbent and potential elected officials for the fall elections. We'll invite folks to be involved in this as well during our meeting on Tuesday.

One of our organizers put together our newsletter with more information below. We hope to see you there!

New Westminster Tenants Union Monthly Public Meeting

Hello, we're hosting our monthly public meeting at the New West Library at 630 tomorrow, June 30th. We'd like to invite any renters in the city to join us and learn more about our organization and the work we're doing in the community.

First we'll update everyone on the progress of some important direct action we're working on, then invite folks to spend the remainder of the meeting working with us on our municipal election project, or any concerns or projects you may have to bring forward.

At a time where housing is a major issue in our society, this is a open invitation to come and meet with friendly and engaged volunteers working to make the city a better place for renters.
