Best Setting for Apple TV
Spent a few hours testing Asobi on Apple TV with the performance overlay enabled and wanted to share the best settings I found.
Setup:
- Apple TV 4K (latest gen)
- Ethernet
- Competitive latency mode
- HDR mostly off during testing
The biggest issue I was troubleshooting:
Random FPS drops/stutter lasting anywhere from 2–30 seconds. Sometimes it would happen after 15 minutes, sometimes after an hour.
Big takeaway:
The issue for me was NOT network quality.
Across all tests:
- RTT stayed ~19–22 ms
- VL stayed 0.0%
- Drops stayed 0
The real difference was DT (decode time), and this was super important for Apple TV.
My results:
- 720p: ~2.8 ms DT
- 1080p: ~3–5 ms DT
- 1440p: ~6.7–7 ms DT
- 4K: ~13–15 ms DT
At 60 FPS, you only have a budget of:
~16.7 ms/frame
So native 4K gameplay was getting VERY close to the maximum frame budget. Once DT climbed into the ~14–15 ms range, I started seeing FPS dips and frame pacing issues even though network stats still looked perfect.
Lowering bitrate barely changed anything.
Lowering resolution changed everything.
Best settings for me by far:
- 1440p
- 50 Mbps
- Competitive mode
This gave:
- stable 60 FPS
- ~6.7 ms DT
- noticeably smoother gameplay
- much better frame pacing than native 4K
1440p honestly feels like the sweet spot on Apple TV right now.
