Manufacturing Myth: A thicker rope automatically lasts longer.

Diameter is only one part of durability.

  • Sheath construction.
  • Fiber quality.
  • Braiding density.
  • Finishing treatments.

All of these influence how a rope behaves over time.

Two ropes with the same diameter can perform very differently.

What's the biggest factor you notice when a rope starts aging?

Question for the multipitch crowd: What's the first thing that makes you retire a rope?

One of our climbers recently climbed Dedo de Deus in Brazil.

It got us discussing something that comes up on almost every long multipitch day: How much rope abuse are you willing to accept in exchange for better handling?

Most of us love a rope that feeds smoothly, coils nicely, and feels great in the hand.

But after enough pitches, enough rappels, and enough days dragging over rock, durability starts looking pretty attractive too.

For those putting serious mileage on their ropes: What's your preference these days?

A rope that handles beautifully but shows wear sooner, or a workhorse that's built to last even if it feels a bit less refined?

Curious how opinions have changed with experience.

What's the best piece of rope advice you've ever received?

One of the best things about this community is how knowledge gets shared. Could've come from a climbing partner, a rescue instructor, a mentor, or someone who simply knew what they were doing.

Sometimes it's the smallest tips that stay with us for years and shape how we move in the vertical world.

Care to share that one piece of advice you still carry with you today?

What's the dumbest rope mistake you've made?

No judgment here.

Back-clipped, rapped off the end, stepped on your rope for years, trusted a sketchy anchor, forgot a knot, retired a rope way too late...

What's the mistake that changed how you climb today?

Curious what lessons people carry with them....
