Buying my first food truck in San Diego County, CA — Can anyone help me understand the DMV process and requirements?
Hey everyone! I’m looking into purchasing my first food truck or food trailer in San Diego County, California, and I’m trying to figure out all the steps involved before I pull the trigger.
I’ve been running my food business as a permitted 10x10 food booth, and my goal is to move into a truck or trailer. The problem is that the DMV process and all the paperwork involved seem confusing, and I want to make sure I understand everything before spending my money.
I’m hoping to hear from people who have actually purchased and registered a food truck or trailer in California, preferably in San Diego County.
Here’s what I understand so far, but please correct me if I’m missing anything.
1. Purchase the truck or trailer.
Is there anything specific I should verify or request from the seller before completing the purchase? Are there particular documents I should have them sign or provide beyond the title and bill of sale?
2. Handle the DMV paperwork, registration, taxes, and title transfer.
From what I understand, I’ll need to transfer ownership, pay the applicable fees and taxes, and get the vehicle properly registered. Is there anything different about registering a food truck compared to a regular vehicle?
2A. How do I determine the vehicle’s weight and the correct registration classification?
I’m most likely looking at an older Chevrolet P30 step van, possibly from the 1990s or earlier, although I’m also open to a food trailer depending on what kind of deal I find.
How do you determine the correct weight for registration purposes? Do you use the manufacturer’s listed weight, the weight on the title, the actual weight on a certified scale, or something else?
For those who have registered converted step vans as food trucks in California, how did you handle this? And are the requirements different for a trailer?
3. What other DMV or vehicle-related requirements should I know about?
I’m trying to account for everything that has nothing to do with the cooking equipment itself. For example:
Smog certification requirements for older vehicles.
Commercial vehicle registration or any special classification requirements.
Vehicle weight limits, weight certificates, or other inspections.
Title issues, registration back fees, expired tags, or outstanding liens.
Any additional permits, inspections, or paperwork required before legally driving the truck.
Are there any common surprises or expensive mistakes I should watch out for?
4. What insurance companies do you recommend for food trucks in California?
I’d appreciate recommendations from people who have insured their own food trucks or trailers. Are there companies that understand mobile food businesses and offer reasonable rates? Is there anything specific I should look for in a policy?
5. Any other advice for a first-time buyer?
One important thing to mention: I’m only interested in a truck or trailer that is essentially turnkey. I want a unit with a current health permit, where applicable, and a kitchen that already meets the requirements for operation. I understand that permits don’t transfer to a new owner, so I’ll verify that with the county before buying.
I don’t have the time, energy, or budget to take on a major renovation project. My goal is to purchase something that can get me operating as soon as reasonably possible, assuming I complete all the required ownership transfers, inspections, permits, and approvals.
If you’ve bought a food truck in San Diego County or elsewhere in California, I’d love to hear how you went about it, what you wish you had known beforehand, and what you would do differently.
Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any advice from people who have been through this process.
