What's up With Digital Out on the 7th Gen Classic?
I've gathered the 7th gen (and maybe the 6th) iPod classic technically supports true digital out, but as far as I can tell it is annoyingly hard to access? However I can't find a totally comprehensive explanation. I'd love to listen with a dongle DAC on the go, even if it took daisy chaining a few adapters, but from my Googling it seems even that is not possible at present.
I have seen a few comments saying that for digital out there needs to be a handshake proving the device is licensed? There appear to be one or two docks out there that let one get a true digital out, but they are not portable at all. And it seems that even with the more feature rich USB C mods there is not straightforward digital out, only analog out. Is that an accurate summation of the current state of things? If so, what are the prospects of there someday being a USB C mod with a real digital out. I would also be happy with a 30 pin to whatever dongle that with enough daisy chaining could work with a usb dongle dac, but I haven't found anything like that.
Thanks!
