I would like to play some mods that have a similar or even darker tone than the original game as i enjoyed base game a lot

With the servers shut down and everything being pretendo now, is there a way to play online games (like splatoon, mario kart 8 etc.) without owning a wii u anymore? I’ve seen threads from 7+ years ago saying you needed a real wii u but i just wondered if that’s changed over the years.
