It’s commonly believed that souls in the Greek Underworld are trapped in their final thoughts, endlessly repeating whatever passed through their minds at the moment of death. Jay even confirms this as canon in Epic: The Musical. And yet, Tiresias seems to break that rule—he remains fully conscious, capable of speaking with Odysseus. A fitting exception for a prophet of his power.

Or is he?

What if, in his final moments, Tiresias experienced a prophetic vision of Odysseus visiting him in the Underworld—and that was the thought he died with? A vision not just of the encounter, but of the journey still ahead. If that were the case, then what appears to be awareness might simply be repetition.

That would explain why Tiresias never truly answers Odysseus’ questions, instead repeating the same prophecy over and over. Because those weren’t responses—they were his final thoughts, echoing endlessly. A prophecy, frozen at the moment of death.

And just to be clear, this is a theory specific to Epic: The Musical, not to The Odyssey as a whole.
