Unpopular opinion, but I can't stand Matt's new vocal style
Just saw the new proshot video of Throes of Perdition on YT, and man I literally couldn't bear to watch it due to the vocals. I do appreciate gritty vocals but Matt's way of doing it just sounds horrible to me. Forced and unnatural, like he's doing it just for the sake of sounding gritty. Maybe this is the most comfortable way of "unclean" singing since he blew his vocal cords, I don't know, but it just kinda "ruins" (videos of) live performances for me. I saw them on the Ascendancy tour and felt the same then, though it fits Ascendancy songs a bit more than Throes, apart from the bridge and prechoruses.
Additionally in this specific video, the original song's verses are sung cleanly which for me is part of the song's charm, but 3/4 of the lyrics are just grit screams now. Y tho?
Probably offended some diehard fans here, but oh well. I still love Trivium and will definitely see them live again if they play somewhere close, but I do wish he'd adapt to a more natural sounding actual scream.
