On the invention of Distortion: Some thoughts and questions.
Ok, I am well aware of the lore behind the Kinks and Link Wray being contenders for the first distorted guitar recorded, but I have some doubts about whether or not people were already fucking around with just simply cranking the volume on their amps. It's like we forget that people pay top dollar for vintage amps of that era because of their distortion tones when we credit those recordings as the first distortion. I have a tweed Champ homebrew that rips when you get past noon on the volume. I know that pickups back then had less output, generally, but even that is kinda suspect because those 50's guitars still exist and don't have a reputation for being that much lower in the output.
So what gives? Was it just because of the times that distortion was heard as entirely undesirable and so therefore the volume knob was basically an adjustment to dial out distortion while maximizing clean volume? Or was it true that stabbing your speaker cone was the only way to get distortion before companies began purposefully increasing the gain of the pre-amp tubes?
Are there any researched articles about this or anyone else who's wondered about it?
