Chronicles of Aether 3.0 is live: Multiplayer battle.
Hi everyone ✋,
Version 3.0 is out. For the first time, a GM and players can join the same battle from separate devices.
Multiplayer is in beta and currently supports local network play. Expect bugs, especially around connection setup and different Wi-Fi networks. My longer-term goal is to support people playing remotely and add more shared features, like campaign and party management. I’m starting with local battles and want to see how they work at real tables.
What you can do
- The GM can host a battle, review join requests, and approve or decline each player.
- Players join with a character from their own library and use its Battle screen.
- The GM’s tracker shares the battle roster, HP and MP, status effects, and turn state with connected players.
- Players can use supported Battle actions, manage combat resources and supported statuses, and take their turns. Their action events and changes sync to the GM’s tracker. Battle actions are blocked during the enemy turn.
- If a player disconnects, their device keeps the last synced battle snapshot. They’ll need a new invitation to reconnect.
Quick Join, with internet
- Connect the GM and player devices to the same Wi-Fi or hotspot, and open the app on each.
- In GM Combat, the GM starts hosting and shares the Quick Join room code.
- The player loads their character, opens Multiplayer from Battle, and enters the code.
- The GM approves the character.
Quick Join needs internet while the devices pair. After that, battle data travels directly between them.
Manual pairing, without internet
Both devices still need to be on the same Wi-Fi or hotspot, but that network doesn’t need internet access. If you’ll be fully offline, open or install the app on both devices beforehand.
- The GM starts hosting, opens Offline/manual pairing, and creates a player invitation.
- The player opens Multiplayer from their character’s Battle screen, chooses Offline/manual pairing, and pastes the invitation.
- The player creates an answer code and sends it back to the GM.
- The GM pastes the answer to finish connecting.
Each invitation works once, so make a separate one for each player. Keep the GM page open in the foreground while people are connected. Some Wi-Fi networks, browser privacy settings, and firewalls can block a direct connection.
This is an early version, and I expect rough edges. If you try it, please tell me which connection method you used, what device and browser you were on, and where the setup or battle flow got confusing. Bug reports, rules questions, and feature ideas can also go through the feedback button in the app.
A couple of updates
- I improved GM Bestiary Quick Assembly previews and affinity controls, fixed the Planner’s Heroic Skills selector loading and visibility, and corrected Inspire persistence and Fultimator NPC exports. GM combatant controls also make it easier to add, move, and remove units.
- GM Combat got a more adaptive layout for smaller screens. Add Ally and Add Enemy controls now sit with their respective sides, and the selected-combatant dock groups DEF, MDEF, INIT, and shortcuts to the dice roller, Chronicle, and creature details.
