First plein air

First plein air

Started to feel like I wasn’t progressing. Just painting from photos and tutorials. I like to take morning walks so I brought along a sketchbook, a half pan set, a pen and some water brushes. It’s a good thing that there was a drinking fountain nearby. Had to refill the brushes a few times.
It’s not a great painting, I know, but I am satisfied with the result. Feels like a step in the right direction for me.
The shadows appeared as I was painting. They came unexpectedly. I should have made the values darker. Maybe I will correct it in the future

This ain’t watercolor paper

I know people make a big deal about using the best paper and paint and brushes. For the most part, I agree. But, and there’s always a but, sometimes I like to experiment in unconventional ways. This is a piece of white cardboard. The kind that is used to make cereal boxes. The photo is from a real estate advertisement. The paint is a half pan set that I found at hobby lobby for 40% off (paid $4).
I don’t know if it’s good. But it is interesting.
