Beginner advice

Hello everyone, I've always thought throwing the shot put would be fun, so I finally decided to give it a try. I just got out of my sophomore year of college and was hoping to at least try out for my school's track team this coming season (next spring season). I went out to practice with a 16lb for the first time today with some lose research on the proper form as to not hurt myself. I was consistently hitting around 25-30 ft from a standing throw, and around 20-25ft with my attempt at a glide lmao. I've never attempted shot put before this and was wondering if this is a sloid starting point, also I am wondering if I should still set my sites on trying out as a walk on for this coming spring season. For reference, my school's throwers average in the high 40s - low 50s for shot put. I weigh just over 200lbs and feel I have a solid start in the weight room, 315lb-bench, 350lb-back squat, 200lb -power clean. Any advice on helpful videos or exercises to try is appreciated, I also want to know how realistic increasing my distance by almost double in a year is.
