New interest in discus any tips??

So I’ve recently taken an interest in discus. I’ve never done any throwing before. So any tips help. I can’t quite get the spin down I’m doing good on release but not the spin. Since school and the season is over I’m not getting help from a coach right now I’m kinda teaching myself with videos and self practice lol. Please help 😁!!

Off Season - 2.5k - 54.21m

Was having a talk with my coach about the hierarchy of importance in throwing and came to some interesting conclusions.

For most of my career, I've heavily focused on emulation and copying positions. My coach calls it bullshit but I wanted to understand why. He gave me a good example of our training, which focuses mostly on holistic changes to patterns, intention, and force production/summation.

And even though my positions, in my opinion, aren't good, my distances have been vastly improving in the circle; faster than they ever have and throwing has become almost laughably easy to manipulate.

Was an important lesson in the superficiality of technical sports. It's not what we see, but what we don't. Focus on the things that matter, and less on the things that don't.

Any tips for my daughter

I think her form looks ok, but it's only going 95 feet, I feel like she should be hitting in the 100s at least with her form here. Thanks

Best throw in a month

Had a pretty big distance regression because I've been trying to take the time to break down my form and fix it. Today, I had one blow by my 160 mark landing between 165-170. Im not exactly sure what I did right to cause a jump in distance. The throw felt slow, and I didn't feel like I created much separation.

Congrats to Jess Schilder for throwing a new DL record of 21.09m in the shot put

As well as being a new DL record (previous record was 21.02m from Valerie Adams in 2012), her mark of 21.09m is also a Dutch national record, the farthest throw in the world in 15 years and the first ever 21m+ throw from a female athlete using the rotation.

Shoe Recommendations

I am looking for shoes for my cousin who is in high school. Originally she had wanted "Adidas Men's Adizero Throws Track & Field Shoes" in a very bright yellow/green but those shoes are nearly impossible to find here.

Can anyone recommend a great shoe that is readily available online in canada. Help is much appreciated.

Speed

So I’ve recently been experimenting picking up speed out of the back, but when I do my form completely falls apart. Regardless of that I get more distance. I have districts coming up Tuesday so should I go for speed or continue to focus on my form for the meet. Sounds like a dumb question I know but I’m genuinely debating myself on it.

Aspiring decathlete needing shot put help

I’m only 5’9 and 155 lbs so I know I’m never gonna be great at shot. I’m quite strong though (325 bench, 40” vert), so you’d think I’d be able to throw a 16lb shot at least 11m. However, my PR is only 9.45m and this is a little over 8m. Any tips?

Beginner advice

Hello everyone, I've always thought throwing the shot put would be fun, so I finally decided to give it a try. I just got out of my sophomore year of college and was hoping to at least try out for my school's track team this coming season (next spring season). I went out to practice with a 16lb for the first time today with some lose research on the proper form as to not hurt myself. I was consistently hitting around 25-30 ft from a standing throw, and around 20-25ft with my attempt at a glide lmao. I've never attempted shot put before this and was wondering if this is a sloid starting point, also I am wondering if I should still set my sites on trying out as a walk on for this coming spring season. For reference, my school's throwers average in the high 40s - low 50s for shot put. I weigh just over 200lbs and feel I have a solid start in the weight room, 315lb-bench, 350lb-back squat, 200lb -power clean. Any advice on helpful videos or exercises to try is appreciated, I also want to know how realistic increasing my distance by almost double in a year is.

Online coaching

Has anyone ever done any online coaching? Throwers university, Joe Maxwell, throwify? I’m looking for someone only in the off season. If so, what was your thoughts and about how much did it cost?

16.36 for a new pr and to end my last outdoor season

Wanted 17 but to go from 14.61 to 16.36 in a season is already a big jump. Excited to try to continue throwing without a swim season to interrupt me every year.
