How To Make a Lineup: For Major League Managers
This is based on "The Book: Playing the Percentages in Baseball" which is basically a mandatory read for baseball analysts and managers. Don Kelly, I'll send you a copy if you're worried you can't afford it on the salary Nutting gave you.
- Best on-base guy. If he's fast, it's a bonus. But more importantly, he needs to be on base. Nicky G, not Oneil Cruz.
- Best all-around hitter. This is usually where your all-star goes, but Reynolds is having a down year. Right now, probably Horwitz or O'Hearn (get well soon).
- Second-best power hitter. There's some complicated math behind why he goes here and not 4th, as far as percentages of having guys on ahead of him. Put Cruz here.
- Best power hitter. Brandon Lowe. This slot is the most likely to have guys on base in front of him.
- Second-best all-around hitter. Griffin or the other one of Horwitz/O'Hearn.
- through 9. The remaining guys from best to worst.
You're welcome.
