New to this - What do I do when I'm no longer interested?

For context and to be compliant with the automod thingy I'm 26M, straight and matching with women in the Midwest. I've never really given online dating a try until recently, and I'm struggling to understand what is expected socially when we match and have our intro conversations but I realize they're not the right person for me.

Is it okay to just leave the conversation on read if I'm not vibing anymore? Should I unmatch them? If I unmatch, should I gently explain why? I want to be kind and respectful of these women's time and hearts but I also don't want to be locked into a convo after I know I'm not interested, or lead them on by continuing to give replies.

I don't know if it's considered an "asshole" move to unmatch without saying anything, so I'd like some input (preferably from women) on how to be a gentleman when this happens.
