Writing Chinese: I’m Sick | Learn Chinese Vocabulary Through Writing

Writing Chinese: I’m Sick | Learn Chinese Vocabulary Through Writing

Learn how to write and use essential Chinese words and phrases for talking about being sick. In this lesson, you’ll practice Chinese characters, pronunciation, meaning, writing tips, and simple example sentences.

Chinese vocabulary:

感冒 (gǎnmào) — to have a cold

Writing tip: 感 has 心 at the bottom, while 冒 has 目 inside the top part. Pay attention to the structure and write each component in the correct order.

Example: 我感冒了。

Wǒ gǎnmào le.

I have a cold.

咳嗽 (késou) — to cough

Writing tip: Both characters have 口 on the left, which is a useful clue because coughing is related to the mouth/throat.

Example: 我一直咳嗽。

Wǒ yìzhí késou.

I keep coughing.

发烧 (fāshāo) — to have a fever

Writing tip: 发 is written from top to bottom with attention to its distinctive upper shape; 烧 has 火 on the left, which relates to heat.

Example: 我发烧了。

Wǒ fāshāo le.

I have a fever.

嗓子疼 (sǎngzi téng) — sore throat

Writing tip: 嗓 has 口 on the left and 桑 on the right. 疼 contains 疒, the “sickness” radical, which appears in many characters related to illness or pain.

Example: 我的嗓子疼。

Wǒ de sǎngzi téng.

My throat hurts.

不舒服 (bù shūfu) — uncomfortable; not feeling well

Writing tip: 不 is a very common character, while 舒 contains 舍 and 予. Practice writing the characters separately first, then combine them into the phrase.

Example: 我今天不舒服。

Wǒ jīntiān bù shūfu.

I don't feel well today.

好了 (hǎo le) — better; recovered

Writing tip: 好 is made from 女 and 子. Pay attention to the position and balance of the two components. 了 is a simple character, but make sure the second stroke is written correctly.

Example: 我好多了。

Wǒ hǎo duō le.

I feel much better.
